RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Project Consultant (GPS Real-Time Acoustic Weapons Scoring)                         2005 - 2006

Trident Research, LLC, Austin, TX

Investigated seasonal and other variations in ocean environments across the globe and the resulting effects on the accuracy of localization predictions obtained for a distributed array of floating acoustic sensors using time-difference of arrival algorithms.

Applied Research Laboratories, University of Texas at Austin                              1987 – 2004

Environmental Sciences Laboratory, Austin, TX

Research Scientist IV (2000 – 2004)                                  Research Scientist III (1998 – 2000)

Post-doctoral Fellow  (1996 – 1998)                                   Research Assistant      (1987 – 1996)

Distributed Underwater Surveillance Systems  (1998 – 2004)

Lead scientist of working group primarily engaged in analyzing the acoustic performance of distributed underwater surveillance systems.

  • Regular participant at national working group meetings attended by Navy sponsor and research scientists from Naval and private defense contractor laboratories.
  • Earned outstanding recognition award from SPAWAR, individually and as a team member.

Ground Vehicle Detection and Classification (1996 – 1999)

Developed automated ground-vehicle detection and classification algorithms based on spectral analysis of low-frequency seismic data1.

  • Participated in joint conference with law enforcement organizations interested in using detection algorithms for border surveillance.
  • Supervised undergraduate students and computer programmers.

Theoretical and Applied Underwater Acoustics (1991 - 1999)

Formulated analytical solutions describing the broadband propagation and scattering of underwater sound in a 3-D inhomogeneous ocean environment for both bi-static and mono-static source/receiver geometries2-6.

  • Designed and implemented the acoustic propagation model, NAUTILUS, accepted into the Oceanographic and Atmospheric Library in 20017 and now a U.S. Navy standard.
  • Supervised undergraduate students and summer high school interns.
  • Refereed papers for peer-reviewed journals.

Non-Linear Fluid Dynamics and Thermo-Acoustics (1987 – 1991)

Used theoretical and numerical applied mathematical techniques to investigate non-linear thermo-acoustic instabilities in thermally conductive, viscous, compressible fluids8.

Graduate Research Assistant                                                                           (1987 – 1989)

University of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA

Collected and analyzed time-of-flight data from a small ion-beam accelerator9-10.
