Employment:

August, 2014 - present                Associate Professor, Austin Community College; Austin, Texas

As a full-time faculty member for Austin Community College, I am responsible for teaching Medical Terminology and Pharmacology courses to students in either a formal classroom setting or online through distance learning.  This includes weekly lecture preparation and presentation, developing homework assignments, preparing review activities, creating and administering unit exams, record keeping functions, and final grade reporting for student transcripts.  In addition, I assist the department in developing new courses for presentation to Allied Health Students.

October, 2006 – July, 2014          Round Rock Independent School District; Round Rock, Texas

Served as a classroom teacher at Cedar Ridge and Stony Point High Schools for students that are taking health science electives such as Practicum in Health Science and Medical Terminology.  Daily responsibilities include: lesson planning, group activities, unit review and assessment activities.  Additional responsibilities include maintaining on-line grading system and teacher website, as well as being an advisor for our HOSA student organization.

August, 2005 - July, 2006          PRN Case Manager, Seton Healthcare; Austin, Texas

Primary responsibilities include utilization review services for an identified floor or group of patients in order to make sure they have the most appropriate status determination for their needs.  The position requires patient medical records to be reviewed on a daily basis for all new patients, as well as for existing patients that need to have updated information sent to their insurance company.  In addition, the case manager is responsible for discharge planning along with the social worker to assure that the patient’s needs are met once they are discharged.  This function includes arranging for home durable medical equipment, infusion services, or placement in a nursing home, rehabilitation hospital or skilled nursing facility.

Primary responsibilities included nursing assessment of illnesses and injuries for students and staff members using inspection, auscultation and palpation tools, providing therapeutic treatment for illnesses and injuries, evaluating effectiveness of treatments, and communicating assessment findings to parents and primary health care providers.  Other related responsibilities included hearing & vision exams, providing health related education to classrooms (such as dental care, hygiene, germ transmission, and heart functions) as well as training pertinent for staff members (such as bloodborne pathogens, food allergy awareness, and pertussis symptoms) on an as needed basis. 

January, 2000 - June, 2002           Training Specialist, EmSTAT Corporation; Austin, Texas

Primary responsibilities included training Emergency Department staff from around the country in how to use the EmSTAT computer documentation system.  Training efforts included preparing documentation materials, teaching software through a variety of methods (verbal discussion, hands on demonstration/practice, and web based training), monitoring class progress, as well as answering customer questions related to the implementation and training process.  In addition to training, I served as a clinical resource to the software developers and as an Account Manager for eight (8) existing client accounts. The Account Manager role involved reviewing, scheduling, and assisting with implementation of new software modules, interfaces, and customizations to the clients’ computer system.

April, 1991 -  Dec., 1999                Staff Nurse/Education Coordinator, Emergency Department 

                                                        Christus Schumpert Health System, Shreveport, Louisiana

Served as a Staff Nurse 1-2 days each week in the Emergency Department setting.  As a staff nurse, I was responsible for triage and assessment of patients in all age groups, carrying out treatment orders, and evaluating effectiveness of treatments.  Education responsibilities included developing, implementing and coordinating all education activities (such as orientation, mentoring, inservice, credentialing, and continuing education) for staff members in the Emergency Services Department; acted as an instructor and/or course director for several nationally recognized courses such CPR, ACLS, ENPC, and TNCC; and maintained detailed records of staff competencies and credentialing.

In addition, I appreciated a progressive increase in managerial responsibilities during employment including interviewing applicants for staff vacancies, making hiring recommendations to the Department Manager, and assisting with scheduling of staff members for departmental coverage.  While employed in this position, I was able to serve as the Facilitator and/or team member on several hospital-wide committees including: Competency, Peer Review, Service Excellence, Code Blue, Organ Donation, Nursing Ethics, End of Life, and the Disaster Management team.

Lastly, I served as the System Administrator for the implementation of the emergency department computer system (EmSTAT).  This involved both initial implementation and subsequent customization to the system, as well as staff training, troubleshooting, and planning for future module installation.

November, 1986 - April, 1991         Flight Nurse, Life Air One Christus Schumpert Health System; Shreveport 

Primary responsibilities included responding to ill or injured patients in the pre-hospital or rural hospital setting; provided nursing assessment and intervention skills in a variety of settings; maintained readiness of the medical equipment and supplies aboard the aircraft; provided follow-up information to the patient, the patient’s family, and the requesting agency; responsible for providing educational offerings for the flight crew and referral agencies including both pre-hospital providers and rural hospital employees.
