• 1301 English Composition I
Students focus on the skills needed to understand composition and
rhetoric. I strive to inspire as much class participation as possible and
encourage critical thinking skills. By assigning subjects from opposing
viewpoints for essays and discussion, ethical and philosophical opinions
are brought forward for deliberation. Even students with limited English
speaking ability are encouraged by presenting a wide range of reading
materials with universal content. My goal is to prepare students to
demonstrate a basic understanding of research, composition, and
comprehension of literature. Research methodologies are demonstrated
by orientating students in the library for primary and secondary source
materials.
• 1302 English Composition II
Students must demonstrate an understanding of fiction by composing
essays using the skills learned in Composition I and incorporating the
seven elements of fiction. Each assignment focuses on a different
element, allowing for full comprehension and demonstration of each
aspect: tone, setting, character, point of view, central idea, conflict, and
language.
• British Literature I and II
Students must provide a working knowledge of the characteristics of various
literary genres. They should develop analytical and critical thinking skills
through reading, discussion, and written assignments. Through this, they will
have a broader inter-cultural reading experience which will deepen the
student’s awareness of the universal human concerns that are the basis for
literary works. This approach will stimulate a greater appreciation of language
as an artistic medium and of the aesthetic principles that shape literary works.
