                                     I am responsible for teaching various levels of English courses including composition
                                     I, introduction to writing, composition II (short stories), early American literature
                                     (regular and honors), contemporary American literature, Contemporary British
                                     literature, and Introduction to Literature ONLINE using Blackboard.  I create syllabi
                                     and writing assignments for all classes.  I also attend regular departmental meetings,
                                     serve on hiring committees, grade evaluation committees, and participate in the
                                     decision making process of adopting textbooks.

I was responsible for tutoring students with their writing, helping them with the use of  computers, generating handouts, visiting instructors’ rooms to inform classes about the Center, creating a web site for the Center, and anything else related to the operation of this newly established facility.

I guided students through the principles of grammar and writing in order to prepare them for freshman English courses.  I created tests and writing assignments that interested students, thus motivating them to learn.

I taught all levels of English including introduction to writing, introduction to literature, early American literature and contemporary American literature.  I stressed group work in order to prepare students for future jobs; I exposed students to literature they were unfamiliar with in order to provide them with a more expanded knowledge of English; I also taught introduction to writing using computers in order to familiarize students with the reality of what role technology will play in the future.

I taught introduction to writing using computers, tutored in the writing skills lab, and, again, stressed the importance of group work by requiring group projects be completed.

2018, July 13--co-presented with John Matteson (Pulitzer Prize winner) at the Annual Thoreau Gathering in Concord, MA. Title: Thoreau at the Crossroads: Choosing Between Environmental Armageddon and the Uber-State

2012, January —conducted a presentation at the American Historical Association’s Annual Conference in Chicago, IL. The focus was an updated presentation about my Emerson Project. Title: Emerson’s Transparent Eyeball: Tribute Through The Eyes of a Transcendentalist

2011, October--I conducted a presentation at the Community College Humanities Association National Conference in Ft. Worth, TX. The focus was my use of visual images to teach American literature. Title: Visualizing American Literature: Interpreting Literature Through Images

2011 March--conducted a presentation at the Organization of American Historians Conference in March 2011; the session was based on participation at the NEH "Landmarks of American History" Summer Workshops: Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. Presentation title: "The Wampanoag: A Study in Primary Sources"

2010 October--conducted a presentation at the annual Southwest Division CCHA Conference; title: "The Wampanoag: A Study in Primary Sources"

2010 April—conducted a presentation at the Organization of American Historians Conference in April 2010; the focus is my Emerson Project (see Academic Highlights); title: “Emerson’s Transparent Eyeball: Tribute Through The Eyes of a Transcendentalist” 

2007 March— conducted a presentation titled “I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Perpetual Need for Equality in Her Land” during the Women’s History Month celebration. Eastview, Austin, Texas

2008—2007 I served on the Women’s History Month Committee and helped organize the events scheduled; celebration titles “Women’s Art: Women’s Vision” (07) and “Generations of Women Moving History Forward” (08) 

2004—I served as Program director for the TYCA conference held in Austin, TX.  I designed program covers, accepted proposals for possible conference workshops, organized committee meetings, and contacted those whose proposals were accepted.  

2001 July—I was selected to participate in the Active Learning Strategies Summer Institute.  I joined 19 other selected colleagues for two weeks, 4 hours a day to share, learn, and create new learning strategies for the classroom. 

2001—I was selected to participate in the Great Teaching Retreat as a representative for Austin Community College.   

2000—I was asked to read “Café y Galletas” at the monthly Phi Theta Kappa meeting, Austin Community College. 

2000—I created the curriculum for an early American literature course with emphasis on six authors—Emerson, Hawthorne, Poe, Thoreau, Melville, and Whitman—exploring their connections with each other and their writing.  I was responsible for creating course objectives, determining course content, and choosing course books; I teach the course each spring semester.  

1997—I was responsible for creating curriculum for an American literature course with emphasis in nautical subject matter.  I was responsible for creating course objectives, determining course content, and creating a course textbook.  
 

1994—I was selected to participate in the Kaleidoscope Convention, a national program that promotes diversity in leadership in higher education. (San Antonio, Texas) 

1993 summer—I was selected to participate in the Great Teaching Seminar, a week-long intensive setting where we shared, learned, and created new teaching techniques to implement in the classroom.
