Course Requirements

1. Read the textbook (see Course Calendar for assignments)

2. Use the material on the Blackboard website, including the recorded lecture videos and PowerPoints.

3. Work on the assigned homework problems (see Reading and Homework Schedule) and check your answers on Blackboard or in the book.

4. Take extra credit quizzes prior to the scheduled exam date.

5. Students are highly encouraged to keep up and on schedule.

6. Students are encouraged to get the help they need in a timely fashion.  If you need help, please ask.  Help is available if you need it.  However, not keeping up is not a good excuse.  If, for some reason, your messages are not returned, it is up to you to follow up and get help.  Make sure you include your name, section number, and the name of the class in all communications. Keep trying if you do not hear from me.

7. Collaboration with your fellow students is highly encouraged on homework assignments and to understand concepts from a different voice.  Your instructor may facilitate that if requested.

Readings

It is important to read the chapters carefully, as all the test questions come from the textbook.  In addition, students are encouraged to use the instructor’s Blackboard site for a variety of helpful study aides.  If you have a problem, call the instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE:

This statistics course is designed for business majors.  Topics include organization of measurements, determining measures of central tendency, discrete distributions, continuous distributions, confidence intervals, variability, counting, probability, statistical inference, hypothesis testing (large and small samples), simple and multiple regression and correlation analysis, time series, nonparametric methods, and statistical quality control.  The objective of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of statistical procedures, techniques, and applications as used in business.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY:

This is an asynchronous course, and lectures will be recorded.

WITHDRAWALS

It is up to the student to withdraw from this course by the official withdrawal date if they choose to do so.  Please check the academic calendar to confirm this date.  Failure by the student to withdraw from the course or successfully complete it may result in a grade of “F”. Instructors, however, reserve the right to withdraw students for lack of academic progress; students must not rely on their instructor to withdraw them if they wish to withdraw.

Students are responsible for understanding the impact of withdrawing from a course on their financial aid, veterans’ benefits, and international student status.  Per state law, students enrolling for the first time in Fall 2007 or later at any public Texas college or university may not withdraw (receive a “W”) from more than six courses during their undergraduate college education. Some exemptions for good cause could allow a student to withdraw from a course without having it count toward this limit. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor when making decisions about course selection, course loads, and course withdrawals.

INCOMPLETES

Incompletes are not recommended, as students will miss the extra credit for finishing on time, and many incompletes are never completed.  An incomplete (I) grade will be given only if the student has substantially completed the course and earned a passing grade. A student must have completed all exams and assignments to date, be passing, and have circumstances that prevent course completion that occur after the deadline to withdraw with a grade of “W”. All work to complete the course must be completed before the end of the following semester for the granting of an appropriate grade. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade for the course.  It is the student’s responsibility to inform the professor as early as possible of their request for an incomplete.

COMMENTS FOR SUCCESS

You are responsible for all assigned readings and homework.

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the instructor for assistance whenever needed.  I will be happy to schedule appointments with students who need assistance. Many resources are available to help you succeed in this course - you need only ask for help.

The material in this course starts at a very easy level but quickly gets harder.  Make sure you go over the easy stuff, as you will need to know it later in the course.  When you get to the hypothesis testing, it is advisable that you seek help if you have trouble with it.

Statement on Academic Integrity

Austin Community College values academic integrity in the educational process.  Acts of academic dishonesty/misconduct undermine the learning process, disadvantage students who earn credit honestly, and subvert the academic mission of the institution. The potential consequences of fraudulent credentials raise additional concerns for individuals and communities beyond the campus who rely on institutions of higher learning to certify students' academic achievements and expect to benefit from the claimed knowledge and skills of their graduates. Students must follow all instructions given by faculty or designated college representatives when taking examinations, placement assessments, tests, quizzes, and evaluations.  Actions constituting scholastic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, collusion, falsifying documents, or the inappropriate use of the college’s information technology resources.  Further information is available at the Academic Integrity website.
