Course Requirements

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Virtual Course Overview

At the start of the semester, students will be required to view a recorded presentation of relevant course content.

Chapter Reflection Papers

Students will complete reflection papers related to assigned chapter readings. Detailed directions, formatting requirements, and a rubric will be provided on Blackboard.

Chapter Quizzes

Students will also complete a chapter quiz each week. Each quiz will cover 1-3 chapters and consist of 25 multiple choice questions. Chapter quizzes are timed and must be completed in one 30-minute sitting. If a student is registered with ACC Student Accessibility Services and has documented testing accommodations, time extensions will be granted per the student’s faculty notification letter.

A Letter to My Future Child

At the conclusion of the semester, students will write a letter to their (or a) current or future child. In the letter, students will describe the bi-directional nature of the parent, caregiving, or educator role, as well as the impact this has on a child’s development. This assignment serves as the final exam for the course. Detailed directions, formatting requirements, and a rubric will be provided on Blackboard.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Outcomes

CDEC 1354. The end-of-semester outcomes for this course are to (1) summarize principles of growth and development and developmental stages in various domains, (2) discuss theories of development and the impact of developmental processes on early childhood practices and types and techniques of observation, (3) explain the importance of play, and (4) demonstrate skills in practical application of developmental principles and theories, observation techniques, and recognition of growth and developmental patterns.

TECA 1354. The end-of-semester outcomes for this course are to (1) summarize principles of growth and development (2) identify typical stages of cognitive, social, physical, language, and emotional development, (3) compare, contrast, and apply theories of development in practice, (4) discuss the impact of developmental processes on educational practices, (5) identify the stages of play development and describe the important role of play in young children’s learning and development, and (6) demonstrate skills in practical application of developmental principles and theories, observation techniques, assessment, and recognition of growth and development.

Program Outcomes

The Child Care and Development program at ACC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Commission on the Accreditation of Early Childhood Higher Education Programs. Therefore, program learning outcomes correlate with the Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators NAEYC.
