Course Requirements

Swimming I: Beginning swimming skills are taught including the American crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke. Correct breathing skills are emphasized. Previous swimming experience and/or previous knowledge of  basic skills not required.

This class is an activity and participation course.  It is primarily for beginners.  However, intermediate and advanced level swimmers often take this course to work on their technique an endurance.  All ability levels are welcome!

45% attendance (45 points)-showing up to class.

45% participation (45 points)-fully participating in class activities to the best of your ability.

                       10% written test(s) (10 points)-each question will be worth 1 point


Readings

Any recommended readings will be covered as you learn the different stroke or kick techniques.

Skills Covered:

Water adjustment

Back float

Front (prone)  float

Bilateral Breathing for freestyle (breathing equally on both sides) 

Gliding (front & back)

Rolling over (front to back and back to front) first in shallow, then deep water

Changing directions

Survival floating shallow and deep water whenever ready

Freestyle (front crawl)

Elementary backstroke

Back crawl

Breaststroke

Butterfly-introduction

Turns front & back

Surface dives in deep water

Intro to snorkeling shallow and deep water

Treading water in deep water (whenever ready)

Sitting, kneeling and standing diving

Basic Springboard diving 1m           

Sprint and endurance training


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Requirements:

We will swim every class period unless there is inclement weather (lightning &/or thunder) Please call the pool to check. (for ESP classes)

You will not be compared to anyone else in the class. Everyone enters the class with different skill and ability levels. Please be patient with yourself when acquiring new skills. Persistence is the key to mastering swimming skills.

 Departmental Objectives:

1. To learn the rules, fundamentals, skills and benefits of swimming.

2. To learn how to correctly execute required skills and techniques as well as to use the equipment/facilities safely.

3. To understand how Kinesiology relates to a healthy individual lifestyle.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  THIS IS A 12-WEEK SESSION COURSE THAT BEGINS ON TUESDAY, Feb. 17th, 2026. THE POOL WILL BE CLOSED IN CASE OF THUNDER OR LIGHTNING DUE TO SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS.
