Course Subjects
This course offers a comprehensive examination of contemporary principles and practices in law enforcement management and supervision, drawing upon the foundational text Management and Supervision in Law Enforcement by Hess, Orthmann, and LaDue. Students will explore the evolving role of law enforcement leaders, the organizational structure and mission of policing, and the key functions of supervisors in today’s public safety environment. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, effective communication, decision-making, problem solving, ethical reasoning, and human resource strategies relevant to hiring, training, motivation, and performance evaluation. The course incorporates current trends in policing—including intelligence-led, evidence-based, and data-driven approaches—as well as practical tools for managing budgets, resources, and workplace dynamics. Real-world case studies and ethical dilemmas will challenge students to apply theory to practice and prepare them to lead with integrity, professionalism, and adaptability in complex law enforcement settings.
