Course Subjects

This course is a study of the structure and function of criminal courts in the United States. Emphasis is placed on the roles of courtroom participants, trial and appellate processes, judicial decision-making, and the impact of courts on the criminal justice system.

 


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Describe the structure and function of the American court system.

Explain the roles and responsibilities of judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and juries.

Analyze the criminal trial process from pretrial through appeal.

Explain the significance of judicial decision-making and precedent.

Evaluate contemporary issues and challenges facing the court system.
