Course Subjects
ENGL 1301 is an intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis.
Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives
Upon completion of ENGL 1301, students should be able to
- demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes
- develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution
- write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose
- read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts
- use Edited American English in academic essays
Readings
This is a ZTC (Zero Textbook Cost) section. In place of required textbooks, all textbook materials needed for the class will be available online to students free of charge. Students may print copies of the resources but will be responsible for printing costs. Course materials may be Open Educational Resources (OER), see syllabus for specifics.
Course Requirements
Attendance in this class in mandatory and will be factored into students' grades at the end of the semester.
Students will be expected to complete a variety of course work, including:
- Homework & Classwork
- Response Papers
- Preparation for the final project (proposals, annotated bibliography, drafts, conferences, and peer review)
- A final project
To effectively particpate in class and complete assignments, studens will need access to WiFi and a computer.
