Course Requirements

To successfully complete BIOL 2404 – Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology, students are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Meet college readiness standards in reading, writing, and mathematics.
(For Early College High School students, readiness is verified by the school district and Austin Community College prior to enrollment.)

  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled lecture and laboratory sessions.

  • Complete all assigned coursework, including lectures, laboratory activities, quizzes, exams, and assignments, as outlined in Blackboard.

  • Master all lecture and lab learning objectives posted in Blackboard. Students are responsible for all material specified in course objectives, whether covered in lecture, lab, or assignments.

  • Work safely in the laboratory, following all lab safety rules and instructions at all times.

  • Properly use and handle laboratory equipment, including microscopes, models, slides, and dissection materials.

  • Work effectively in groups during lecture and laboratory activities and follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Use appropriate anatomical terminology and demonstrate understanding of the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.

Course Subjects

This course focuses on human anatomy and physiology within the broader discipline of biology, emphasizing the structure and function of the human body at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organ system levels. Core subject areas include anatomical terminology, body organization, cell structure and function, and histology.

The course covers the anatomy and physiology of the major human organ systems, including the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. For each system, students examine gross anatomy, microscopic structure where appropriate, and fundamental physiological processes, with an emphasis on homeostasis and the relationship between structure and function.

Laboratory subjects include identification of anatomical structures using models, preserved specimens, microscope slides,  and dissection techniques, along with safe laboratory practices and proper use of standard laboratory equipment.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Specific skills and competencies expected of students who complete this course
include:
 Identify and explain gross and microscopic anatomical structures of all body systems
and on an appropriate level (knowledge, comprehension, application and analysis)
 Identify and explain anatomical location, gross structures, and histological structure
of tissues and organs of the human body
 Explain basic physiological processes of all body systems and on an appropriate
level (knowledge, comprehension, application and analysis)
 Explain the role of body systems and mechanisms in maintaining homeostasis
 Work safely in a lab setting
