Course Requirements

PREREQUISITES: ARTS 1316 Drawing I or department approval.

Instructors may recommend skills to succeed in course. 

attendance at all meetings and critiques

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY:

Individual and group instruction, demonstrations, lectures, discussions and critiques. Visual aids in a variety of formats: original art, books, periodicals, digital and video presentations.

Attendance is required in order to successfully complete this course


Readings

There is no required text book for this course, however articles and relevant material will be made available to the students digitally as necessary.


Course Subjects

Oil painting techniques including alla prima and glazing. Color theory and paint handling and mixing will be stressed. Working form life will be stressed. Proper handling of material will be stressed.

fist 4 weeks: color theory, mixing, set up, tinting and shading, achromatic, monochromatic paintings

second 4 weeks: full chromatic painting from life, glazing

Midterm critique

third 4 weeks: Exploration of color and combined techniques

fourth 4 weeks: master work study

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

COMMON COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Apply drawing and compositional skills learned in prerequisite courses to their painting projects.

• Understand and mix color to achieve varied and desired outcomes.

• Understand and apply effective painting techniques in a range of styles.

• Paint traditional subjects, i.e. abstraction, still life, nature/landscape, architectural, and the human figure.

• Use appropriate criteria for evaluation and critique of paintings.

• Demonstrate skills in self-direction and self-discipline needed for success in the completion of assignments.

• Demonstrate knowledge of and perform safe and effective studio practices.

• Present completed work in a professional manner.

 Student Learning Outcomes:

Technical information and Basic Techniques:

A. Students will demonstrate understanding of preparing a painting surface for oils or acrylics, the archival process of layering paint and the use of various painting mediums and tools.

B. Students will be able to build a cradled panel or a stretcher for use as a painting structure and understand the proper and safe use of the shop equipment.

Students will demonstrate familiarity with a variety of painting approaches through the experimental use of paint with collage materials or additions to the painting structure and various other paint application techniques.

Students will be able to use the techniques and information learned in creating images that reflect a developing artistic point of view and show improvement in their confidence in working with paint media.

Students will have the ability to intelligently discuss the formal elements, the techniques used and the conceptual ideas in their own paintings as well as their classmates in class critiques.

Students will have a greater awareness of contemporary painters through research in making their paintings.

Students will demonstrate understanding of the varied technical aspects of building a painting surface competently and the use of various painting mediums and painting techniques and exhibit professionalism in the presentation of work for exhibitions.

Students will demonstrate a developing artistic point of view and an ability to produce a cohesive body of work both stylistically and conceptually.

Students will have the ability to intelligently discuss and evaluate the formal elements, the techniques used and the conceptual ideas in their own paintings as well as their classmates in critiques.

Students will be able to cohesively articulate thoughts about their work in an artist statement.
