Course Requirements

Preparation of a portfolio comprised of completed graphic design projects. Evaluation and demonstration of portfolio presentation methods based on the student’s specific area of study. This course is designed to help the student curate and refine previous projects and prepare a graphic design portfolio consisting of work developed in Typography, Design Comm. I and Design Comm. II.

This course will provide you with the tools to effectively enter and build a career in the visual communications industry. A few words of wisdom—don’t take the class lightly. This is your opportunity to craft how potential employers will see you and your work. Everything will take longer than you think it will. At the beginning and end of this semester, your portfolio and the work within it will be reviewed by industry professionals. Put everything you have into your work, and it will show.


Readings

There will be assigned reading for each class meeting. Reading will contain content on industry trends, market trends, and busines of design.


Course Subjects

Arrange and refine projects for inclusion in a graphic design portfolio; identify industry requirements for employment; identify current events, skills, attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the industry and relevant to the professional development of the student; and create a professional portfolio and assets to self-promote.


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will effectively:

• create a self-identity system, including business card, thank you card & mailer, and resume

• critique their previous and current work and the work of their colleagues

• modify, polish and perfect portfolio pieces

• plan and schedule their own work flow and time

• demonstrate job seeking, self-promotion, and interviewing skills

• plan and schedule their own work flow and time

• create a digital portfolio website

• present portfolio and design approach in an interview/presentation setting
