Course Subjects

In this course, students will learn strategies and techniques of writing organized narrative, descriptive, or argumentative paragraphs. Emphasis is on mechanics and standard English grammar. This is the first course in a series designed to prepare ESOL students to handle the writing tasks they will encounter in college-credit level courses and the workplace. This course may be repeated for up to six hours of credit. Upon successful completion of this course, students should register for ESOL 0372: Writing 2.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Write well-organized paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a conclusion sentence, using a logical sequence in a prescribed rhetorical mode, i.e. descriptive, narrative, giving reasons/supporting opinions.
  • Demonstrate ability to use the writing process by generating ideas, drafting, revising, and editing.
  • Demonstrate functional vocabulary knowledge in a variety of contexts at a level appropriate for pre-college level courses.
  • Write coherent and cohesive sentences of three types: simple (affirmative, negative, and interrogative), compound, and complex.
  • Incorporate the use of appropriate transitions.
  • Generally recognize and use proper English mechanics, avoiding many run-on sentences, comma splices, and fragments.
