Course Requirements

Prerequisites: 

Required: A grade of C or better in Grammar 3 (ESOL 0397/COMX 4097) or placement in Grammar 4 through ESOL Assessment Test.

Recommended: Co-enrollment or a grade of C or better in Reading and Vocabulary 3 and Writing 3 or placement in Level 4 on the ESOL Assessment Test for those skills.

In Grammar 4, students will review intermediate verb tenses and proceed to advanced structures, emphasizing communicative use in academic and non-academic contexts. Emphasis is on mechanics and standard English grammar. This is the final class in a series designed to give students the opportunity to review and improve their use of all tenses and structures as well familiarize them with higher level grammar. Grammar 4 serves as a pre/corequisite for Writing 4. This course may be repeated for up to 6 hours.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Define basic parts of speech/grammatical structures and identify them in sentences - nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions; subjects, objects, transitive, intransitive; clauses, phrases, independent clauses, dependent clauses (review)
  2. Accurately conjugate and combine verbs forms: 

Review

  • simple present
  • present progressive
  • simple past
  • past progressive
  • future
  • present perfect
  • present perfect progressive
  • past perfect and past perfect progressive  
  • present, past, and future modals

Introduce

  • future perfect and future perfect progressive;
  1. Describe the rationale for the use of each verb tense;
  2. Create sentences which include the proper verb tense for the context;
  3. Demonstrate appropriate use of active voice vs. passive voice (review);
  4. Create sentences which include the proper use of gerunds and infinitives (review); 
  5. Create sentences which include the proper structuring of adverb clauses and restrictive/nonrestrictive adjective clauses (review);
  6. Create sentences which include reduced adjective and adverb clauses;
  7. Create sentences which include the proper use of conditionals and wishes. 
  8. Create sentences which include the proper use of noun clauses as subjects, objects, and objects of prepositions; 
  9. Accurately convert direct speech to indirect speech and vice-versa.
