Course Requirements
COURSE RATIONALE
Application of the theories, concepts, and knowledge base presented in RNSG 1412 Nursing Care of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family at a specific clinical site or sites.
PREREQUISITES
Prerequisites: RNSG 1442, 1247, and 1360
Co-requisites: RNSG 1412
Placement: Third semester of the nursing sequence.
Course Subjects
This is a clinical-based course conducted in local hospitals and clinics. Work-based instruction that facilitates students’ synthesis of new knowledge, applies previous knowledge, or gains experience managing the workflow under the direct supervision of the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor). All students are responsible for frequently referring to the BlackBoard® site and ACC email for updates and current assignment information.

Professional Nursing Role: Patient Safety Advocate
1. Adheres to the safety requirements and practice setting standards and complies with mandatory reporting requirements as set forth by the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Texas Board of Nursing Rules, and other governing and accrediting agencies.
2. Implements & evaluates measures to promote quality and a safe environment for all individuals and seeks guidance when performing tasks when appropriate or necessary.
Professional Nursing Role: Provider of Patient-Centered Care
1. Integrates clinical reasoning skills and the nursing process, guided by evidence-based practice, as a framework for providing care for multiple individuals and their families with complex health care needs involving multiple body systems, in collaboration with members of the health care team.
2. Develops and implements teaching plans for individuals and their families to address disease prevention, health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
3. Accesses and manages electronic information and material resources in providing care for individuals and their families.
Professional Nursing Role: Member of the Healthcare Team
- Utilizes nursing resources to identify and refer individuals with complex health care needs to resources that facilitate continuity of care; health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
- Communicates with individuals, their families, and members of the health care team to plan, deliver, and evaluate safe and effective patient-centered care in a timely manner.
- Delegates to other members of the health care team to promote safe, effective, and timely care for individuals with obstetric and pediatric health care needs, and their families.
Professional Nursing Role: Member of the Profession
1. Functions within the nurse’s legal scope of practice assume accountability and responsibility for the quality of nursing care provided to adult individuals with obstetric and pediatric health care needs, and their families.
