Course Requirements

Grade Percentages for the course:

Assignments on Spark equals 25 % of the total grade.

Tests are 25 % of the total grade.

Mid-term Exam is 20 % of the total grade.

Final Exam is 20 % of the total grade.

Participation/Attendance is 10 % of the total grade.

Grades:

A          90 – 100 points

B          80 – 89 points

C          70 – 79 points          

D          60 – 69 points          

F          < 59 Points

A student may also earn a grade of IP or in progress.

CREDIT/CE: In order to pass this course, you must have a 70% course score or higher (C).

Course Subjects

In Grammar 1, students will focus on standard English grammar usage for academic purposes. Course includes instruction in verb tenses, parts of speech and basic S-V-O syntax. Instruction will emphasize communicative use in academic and nonacademic contexts.


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

1. Define basic parts of speech and identify them in sentences - nouns, verbs,

adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and prepositions;

2. Create affirmative and negative sentences which include the proper S-V-O

syntax;

3. Create Yes/No Questions, wh-questions and tag questions which include

the proper syntax;

4. Use subject and object pronouns correctly in statements and identify their

referents;

5. Accurately conjugate and combine verb forms:

● simple present

● present progressive

● simple past

● past progressive

● simple past vs. past progressive with when and while

● simple future - will vs. be going to

● present/future modals;

6. Identify the proper verb tense for sentences based on context;

7. Differentiate between count/noncount nouns and their quantifiers;

8. Apply the rules to include or omit definite and indefinite articles.
