Course Requirements

This course aims to provide students with an introduction to the varying software applications utilized within the hospitality sectors of Travel/Lodging, Meeting/Event Planning, Restaurant, Managed Services and Recreation. Study on how systems are integrated will be explored and the benefits examined for operational effectiveness. In-depth analysis of POS and PMS modules will develop industry appropriate knowledge and cultivate students' understanding of the importance these have upon a business’s objectives.

Hospitality Information Technology:  Learning How to Use It 9th Edition

Galen R. Collins, Cihan Cobanoglu, Anil Bilgihan and Katerina Berezina ISBN 9781792427169. In addition to the textbook and covered in class materials, students are encouraged to make use of external resources to enhance the quality of the class and their learning experience including, but not limited to, job experience, publications, and interviews of industry professionals.


Course Subjects

HAMG 1319, COMPUTERS IN HOSPITALITY (3-3-0).  This course involves an introductory application of computers and their relationship as an information system within the hospitality industry. Specific software and hospitality trends are identified and analyzed enabling industry contextualization. Research of the various industry adoption of software provides strategies in the decision-making process.


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

1.      Research and identify how the computer system is integrated as an information source throughout the hospitality operation.

2.      Examine emerging trends, critically assessing functionality and appropriateness.

3.      Operate various applications and software utilized in the hospitality industry.

4.      Conduct in-depth analysis of Point Of Sales systems and practically apply knowledge and understanding gained.

5.      Identify and describe features of the Property Management System interfaces and their importance within a hospitality business.

6.      Describe the various ways in which industry uses technology to develop a competitive advantage to increase revenue and customer loyalty.

7.      Research, select and implement technology systems in hospitality settings, outlining key operational requirements.

8.      Explore the various threats to technology systems and the security strategies and precautions that should be adopted to keep systems protected.
