Course Requirements

An expansion of the skills taught in Jewelry Casting 1, Casting 2 focuses on jewelry casting, including design layout, mold making, casting stones in place, alternative casting and hollow. Industry standards are emphasized. This class consists of 3 projects with the option of a 4th bonus project- time permitting.

Course Subjects

Students taking this course will develop an understanding and a working knowledge of the jewelry casting processes and the uses of related materials and equipment for the manufacture of jewelry.  Quality craftsmanship, industry standards, and time management will be emphasized.  


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Carve, scultpt, sprue, tree, invest, cast, and fully finish with upmost precision and care with a goal to make items, mold them, make more identical, all to the industry standards. Learning new techniques to spark the imiganation and to advance a problem solving mindset.


Supplies

Students are requested to supply the following:

  1. Spiral wax saw blades (#2)
  2. Jewelry saw blades (at least 1 dozen 2/0 size and 1 dozen of the #4 size)
  3. 220 grit Drywall screening
  4. Sandpaper (220, 320, 400)
  5. Drill bits and burs for flex-shaft (as needed)
  6. All materials for projects (metal, solder, rubber for molds, wax for models, etc.)
  7. Any hand tools not supplied by ACC
  8. Safety glasses (shatter-proof with side shields), and protective dark welding glasses with lens rated over #3. (ACC provides glasses with lens rated #3)
  9. Leather gloves (when needed)
  10. Sketch pad
  11. Dust masks

Additional suggested items: Small carving tools and a small portable wax pen or rechargeable (and adjustable temperature) soldering iron with very small tips available.

The items listed as #1 through #4 are available at the local jewelry supply store listed below. They are also available by mail order through any jeweler’s supply catalog (Rio Grande, Gesswein, Hoover & Strong, Stuller, etc.). Items #3, #4, #8, #9 and #11 are available at welding supply stores, hardware stores, and art supply stores.
