Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

The objective of this course is for each student to understand and communicate the fundamental components of music theory. 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic elements of music theory and how they function within the music students make, write, perform, and listen to.

  • Demonstrate an understanding and application of musical language.Recognize and demonstrate an understanding of basic rhythmic components of music.

  • Demonstrate understanding of major and minor tonalities, intervals, chord construction, and chord progressions.

  • Identification and recognition of standard notation, the Nashville Number System, tablature, chord charts, and common song form.


Course Subjects

This course is an introductory overview of the key components of music theory. Course subjects include active listening, rhythm, notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, building chords, chord progressions, inversions, charts, the Nashville Number System, melody and harmony, pop song form, and musical language.

*There is a keyboard performance/playing component to this course. You will need to be able to submit a recording of yourself playing the keyboard.


Readings

The required textbook is Music Theory for Computer Musicians by Michael Hewitt. It is available as paperback or eBook. All required other readings will be provided and accessible online.
