The readings for this course are all available on Blackboard. However, when a class discussion is scheduled, you must have a paper copy of the reading assignment with you—please note, that you cannot have the assignment on your phone or on a laptop; you must have a paper copy. The grading system used in the class will be Departmental System #1, Accept/Edit/Revise/Rewrite (see Departmental Syllabus).  In order to qualify for the Departmental Exam on Monday 11-10, the expressive essay, the persuasive essay, the interpretive essay, the research paper, and the textual analysis essay must all be accepted; it’s also important to remember that these essays must be evaluated sequentially. In order to pass the Departmental Exam, and thus make at least a C in the course, you will have to write a 750 word essay which identifies the expressive, persuasive, and interpretive elements in a piece of writing that will be provided to you; you will also need to determine whether the piece of writing given to you is effective.  The essay you write for the Departmental Exam cannot have more than 10 spelling errors and not more than 6 punctuation errors (miss-placed commas/semicolons, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, comma splices, etc). You must complete the Departmental Exam by the beginning of class, 10:30am, on Wednesday 11-26. The instruction in this course will take place through guided class discussion and one-on-one essay conferences. When a class discussion is held, you may not participate unless you have read the assignment and looked up all the words and references with which you are unfamiliar; you must also have a paper copy of the day’s reading assignment with you; however, if you do not participate in the class discussion, you are still responsible for the material presented that day, and you may be asked to write a 500 word summary of the assigned reading, in addition to the regular essay. If you miss an essay conference, it is your responsibility to arrange a make-up conference. I do take roll during each class discussion session; I do not penalize students who are absent or tardy; I do not penalize students who are absent or tardy because those students have already penalized themselves. Class participation is absolutely essential. Unless you are present and on time for the class discussions and one on one conferences, you will not have access to the material that we discuss, you will be unaware of instructions and deadlines, and, as a result, you won’t be able to complete the work and pass the course. My hope is that everyone in this class will do well, but, since there are plenty of opportunities to be successful with the way the course is designed, I do not assign extra credit projects. If, for some reason, you need to withdraw from this class, please understand that it is your responsibility to complete that process; the counseling office is available to help you, but it is a process that you must initiate and finalize; I do not withdraw students from my courses. If you have questions or if there is some way that I can assist you, please don’t hesitate to contact me or stop by during office hours. When you send me an email, you must use your official ACC student email account; I cannot respond to emails that originate from outside the college. I will do my best to respond to each email within 24 hours between Monday morning and Friday afternoon; I do not respond to emails between 5pm on Friday evening and 7am on Monday morning.
