Course Requirements

Required Materials:

  1. Lab gear 1: Safety glasses/goggles with Z87.1 rating You can buy these at the ACC bookstores or even cheaper at HEB, Home Depot, Walmart, etc.
  2. Lab gear 2: Closed-toe shoes. If you drive to campus, consider keeping a pair in your trunk if possible.
  3. First Day Course Materials: This course is part of an inclusive access model called First Day™. Upon registering for the class, you have already paid a course fee which includes the required Modified Mastering A&P with Pearson eText. It is NOT recommended that you Opt Out, as these materials are required to complete the course. You can choose to Opt Out on the first day of class, but you will be responsible for purchasing your course materials at the full retail price and access to your materials may be suspended. If you opted out, you still must purchase Modified Mastering A&P with Pearson eText for Human Anatomy and Physiology, 12th edition, by Marieb and Hoehn. Pearson Educational Inc., 2024, ISBN-13: 9780134763446 directly through the link provided on Blackboard (you may use an earlier edition of the text but must purchase the access code for the 12th edition of Modified Mastering A&P; do not purchase Modified Mastering A&P from a 3rd party vendor; Both The Textbook And Modified Mastering A&P Are Required For This Course)

  1. A computer or iPad compatible with Respondus Monitor testing software.  Chromebooks and other tablets are not compatible with Respondus Monitor.  Technical requirements include:

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Rationale:

This course is designed for students entering professional programs. It provides a foundation for the clinical topics covered in those courses by requiring mastery of factual material, laboratory techniques, and problem-solving skills. This course is a prerequisite for Introduction to Microbiology (BIOL 2420) and A&P II (BIOL 2402) and is intended to adequately prepare students for these courses and for health sciences programs.

Anatomy & Physiology I and II prepares students applying to one of the following ACC Allied Health Science programs:

    • Sonography
    • Dental Hygiene
    • Nursing – ADN
    • Nursing – MOBT
    • Personal Fitness Trainer (AAS)
    • Physical Therapist Asst/PTA

Student Learning Outcomes:

Course-Level:

Specific skills and competencies expected of students who complete this course include:

  • Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
  • Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ functions in each system.
  • Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
  • Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
  • Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
  • Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
  • Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
  • Locate and identify anatomical structures.
  • Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems, and virtual simulations.
  • Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.
  • Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.
  • Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills, including but not limited to, inferring, integrating, synthesizing, and summarizing, to make decisions, recommendations and predictions.
