Course Requirements
-Prerequisites: WLDG 1457 Intermidiate SMAW.
-Attendance: Mandatory. Excessive unexcused absences may result in withdrawal
-Participation: Students are expected to be on time, with the proper tools (tool list found on syllabus), and actively engaged.
-Safety Compliance: Required. Students must follow lab safety procedures and utilize their PPE; violations may lead to removal from class.
Readings
We utilize "Welding: Principles and Applications, Jeffus, Larry, Delmar Publishers, Inc." , current edition. Instruction and readings/handouts are provided by the instructor.
Students are required to:
- Read the course syllabus
- Follow posted lab safety signage
- Engage in class discussions and demonstrations
Course Subjects
This course builds on previous skills learned WLDG 1428 (Intro to SMAW) and a study of the production of various groove welds begins as well as welding test preparation and execution.
Topics include:
- Electrode selection and handling
- Indtroduction to design and production of shop layout, fabrication, and field erection of critical building and bridge moment connections.
- Welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead groove and fillet welds
- Emphasis placed on symbols, blueprints, and written specifications.
- Use of various equiptment for cutting and fabricating stuctural steel components.
Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Demonstrate welding skills sufficient for industry welding.
- Interpret codes and safety standards that pertain to the welding industry.
- Interpret orthographic and isometric drawings.
- Identify structural components, weldments and tools
- Perform layout methods on structural steel using layout tools and templates.
