Course Requirements

-Prerequisites: WLDG 1428 Introduction to SMAW.

-Attendance: Mandatory. Excessive unexcused absences may result in withdrawal 

-Participation: Students are expected to be on time, with the proper tools (tool list found on syllabus), and actively engaged.

-Safety Compliance: Required. Students must follow lab safety procedures and utilize their PPE; violations may lead to removal from class.


Readings

We utilize "Welding: Principles and Applications, Jeffus, Larry,   Delmar Publishers, Inc." , current edition. Instruction and readings/handouts are provided by the instructor.

Students are required to:

  • Read the course syllabus
  • Follow posted lab safety signage
  • Engage in class discussions and demonstrations


 


Course Subjects

This course builds on previous skills learned WLDG 1428 (Intro to SMAW) and a study of the production of various groove welds begins as well as welding test preparation and execution.

Topics include:

  • Electrode selection and handling
  • Bead placement techniques
  • Welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead groove welds
  • Weld quality and defect identification
     

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Demonstrate welding skills sufficient for industry groove welding.
  • Interpret codes and safety standards that pertain to the welding industry.
  • Layout, cut and prepare welded coupons for destuctive testing.
  • Select proper electods for each groove weld project assigned.
  • Identify weld defects and understand corrective actions
