Course Requirements

-Prerequisites: None listed.

-Attendance: Mandatory. Excessive unexcused absences may result in withdrawal 

-Participation: Students are expected to be on time, with the proper tools (tool list found on syllabus), and actively engaged.

-Safety Compliance: Required. Students must follow lab safety procedures and utilize their PPE; violations may lead to removal from class.


Readings

We utilize "Welding: Principles and Applications, Jeffus, Larry,   Delmar Publishers, Inc." , current edition. Instruction and readings/handouts are provided by the instructor.

Students are required to:

  • Read the course syllabus

  • Follow posted lab safety signage

  • Engage in class discussions and demonstrations


Course Subjects

This course introduces students to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) fundamentals, emphasizing safety, equipment setup, and basic welding skills.

Topics include:

  • SMAW equipment setup and maintenance

  • Electrode selection and handling

  • Bead placement techniques

  • Welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions

  • Weld quality and defect identification


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Demonstrate safe SMAW operations

  • Set up and operate welding equipment

  • Perform basic welds using appropriate electrodes

  • Identify weld defects and understand corrective actions
