Course Requirements
Introduction to yoga including traditional yoga postures (asanas) emphasizing flexibility, breathing (pranyama) and relaxation techniques (savasana). Careful attention to and study of alignment in classical yoga poses. Props (sticky mat, block, belt and blanket) will be utilized.
This is a hybrid course. In-person classes are required as well watching and doing 5 online videos with a review.
Comfortable clothing
Mid-term quiz on yoga philosophy and poses
Final is in-class team teaching pose with a partner (optional, doesn't count toward grade)
Five online videos must be taken with short reviews
Kinesiology Exit Exam (required, doesn't count toward grade)
Course Subjects
1. Discussion of the 8-limbs of yoga
2. Discussion of the different types of yoga
3. Muscles-- rudimentary information on muscles, tendons, ligaments
4. Guided meditations
5. Asanas-- detailed lecture on each of the major asanas, poses, followed by execution of the asana
6. Pranayama techniques-- various yoga breathing exercises
7. Discussion of healthy lifestyle using yoga philosophy
8. Exploration of the yoga Chakra system.
Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives
1. To learn the forms, fundamentals, skills and benefits of yoga.
2. To learn how to correctly execute the asanas and to put them into a flow routine. Creative use of props, ie., sticky mat, block, belt, blanket.
3. To develop one's own home practice
4. To be able to rest fully in savasana, corpse pose.
5. To become stronger and more flexible.
6. To live a healthy, balanced lifestyle utilizing the yoga techniques.
7. To understand the Seven Chakras and apply them to our lives.
