Course Requirements

Course Description

Introduction to engineering as a discipline and profession. Includes instruction in the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the solution of practical problems. A broad range of problems will be considered in order to introduce the student to various engineering majors and careers.

Course Rational/Objectives

  • Introduce the student to the various engineering college disciplines.
  • Introduce the student to the various engineering professions.
  • Develop engineering analysis problem solving skills.
  • Develop the use of graphs and charts to communicate.
  • Introduce the student to the engineering design process.
  • Develop critical thinking.

Course Prerequisites

  • One full year of high school lab science, or equivalent
  • MATH1414 or equivalent

Readings

Required Texts/Materials

  • All course material will be provided via online and/or ZTC resources
  • Scientific calculator (graphing not required)

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course-Level Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the engineering profession and engineering ethics, including professional practice and licensure.
  • Use technical communication skills to explain the analysis and results of introductory group projects and exercises in engineering and computer science.
  • Explain the engineering analysis and design processes.
  • Analyze data collected during laboratory exercises designed to expose the student to the different engineering disciplines.
  • Describe the impact engineering has had on the modern world.
  • As part of a team, design a simple engineering device, write a design report, and present the design.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy.
