Course Description

This course introduces students to the craft of writing flash fiction. Students will explore techniques for creating compelling characters, strong narratives, and emotional resonance. Through writing exercises, readings, peer workshops, and examinations of craft, students will develop their ability to write concise and powerful stories. Students will actively engage in the local literary community and prepare and submit work for publication. No prior experience in writing flash fiction is required.


Course Requirements

Prerequisite: ENGL 1301.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of intentional creative habits contributing to individual and collaborative writing strategies.
  • Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the conventions of one or more specific genres, craft and aesthetic elements, and expressive styles contributing to the overall artistic effect of creative writing.
  • Develop creative ideas and apply the major elements of specific expressive genres to one or more creative artifacts.
  • Apply the manuscript and documentation conventions of genre and audience expectations to drafts prepared for publication or performance.
  • Identify potential publication or performance venues for specific genres of expressive writing.
  • Develop an awareness of personal literary identity and presence in the local literary community.
