Course Requirements

The student must acquire a minimum of 80 scanning experiences. A number of scanning experiences must be an assessment of valvular, pericardial, and/or myocardial disease using echocardiography and documented in Trajecsys.

10 - Full Echo Competency Evaluations (6) on campus; (4) off campus          80%

1 - Final Skills Assessment                                                                               20%

Readings

There are no reading assignments for this course.  However, students should review the cardiac pathology images and videos from Feigenbaum’s Echocardiography, 8th edition for identifying pathology on echo images and the Echocardiographer's Pocket Reference, 5th edition for evaluation techniques.

Course Subjects

This course focuses on a review and echocardiographic evaluation of cardiac pathologies in the adult patient. The student will perform a minimum of 80 echocardiograms. Evaluations from clinical instructors will be provided and the student must meet competency in the echocardiographic evaluation of all the following pathologies before the end of the summer semester and to meet graduation requirements:

Normal Transthoracic echocardiogram

Systolic dysfunction

Diastolic dysfunction

Aortic Valve or aortic root pathology

Mitral valve pathology

Right heart pathology

Cardiomyopathy

Pericardial pathology

Prosthetic valves

Coronary artery disease

Contrast-enhanced echo (observe)

Professional Quality evaluations must also be completed by the off-campus clinical instructors.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

At the completion of DSAE 2266 the student will be able to

  • Effectively critique sonographic images for diagnostic quality and present methods/techniques for improving imaging
  • Apply critical thinking to manipulate equipment functions to improve image quality
  • Effectively critique echocardiographic images for measurement accuracy
  • Correlate clinical findings and echo data to formulate a differential diagnosis of cardiac pathology
  • Identify common cardiac pathologies on echo images, simulator cases, and in Case Studies
  • Perform routine and pathological echocardiographic exams within required time allotments
  • Discuss and explain when physician notifications, and/or emergency protocol is needed
  • Complete the technical report form including describing the sonographic appearances of the anatomy and/or pathology in the exam
