Course Requirements

CDEC 1293 COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Bio Board

At the start of the semester, students will design a tri-fold display board introducing themselves to the children and families of the ACC Children’s Lab School.

Strengths Assessment

Students will complete an online survey to discover their professional strengths and complete a reflection of the survey results.

Mission Statement and Teaching Philosophy

Students will develop a professional mission statement and teaching philosophy related to their role in the classroom, their view of how children learn, the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion, their approach to curriculum development, their approach to guidance, and their role as a resource for and collaborator with families and the community.

Week of the Young Child Newsletter

Students will design a print or virtual newsletter/promotional piece related to NAEYC’s annual Week of the Young Child celebration.

Standards Portfolios

The Child Care and Development program at ACC is accredited by NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children. As an accredited program, our courses must meet certain criteria and align to national standards which serve as “a vision of excellence” for students preparing to work in early childhood education. The Portfolio Assignment in CDEC 1293 is one of six key assessments (KA5) our faculty have designed to specifically align to accreditation standards set forth by NAEYC.

This assignment is designed to have students:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of the expectations outlined in the NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators (Level ECE II).
  2. Provide a collection of professional artifacts and explain how these reflect the NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators.
  3. Reflect on their growth as an early childhood educator throughout their academic journey at ACC.

There are 2 main parts to each standard portfolio:

  • In part 1, you will focus on one of the six NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators. Each standard is addressed by a written Set of Expectations that ask you to reflect on what you know and understand, and how you use the competencies in your day-to-day role as an early childhood educator.
  • In part 2, you will prepare an Artifacts Collection, in which you select documents from your previous coursework and explain how these reflect the six NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators.
