Course Requirements
REQUIRED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Purchase Either (a) OR (b), Not Both:
(a) Nolan, S., & Hockenbury, S. (2022). Discovering Psychology, 9th Edition, Worth Publishers, Macmillan Learning. *Make sure to purchase the Achieve card only for the textbook Discovering Psychology, 9th Edition, in which this Achieve card for online access is the ONLY required purchase. No hard copy purchase is required.
(b) Optional Package: If you also wish to keep a print copy of the textbook, instead of only having temporary access to your textbook online, you can instead purchase the Achieve Plus Loose-Leaf Package (for $50.00 more). **If you are unable to purchase this optional package through the ACC Bookstore for only $50.00 more, you can purchase this package directly through your Blackboard course. Do Not purchase only the ebook separately, as it is included in Options (a) and (b) above.
Course Grading Methods: Your Course Grade is based upon the following:
(A) Class Attendance and Participation = 10% of Course Grade. Attendance to all Class Meetings will be held from 10:30 am – 11:50 am Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Tuesday, August 27th, and ending Thursday, December 12th, for 16 weeks. Therefore, attending class in person for this class is required as a portion of your course grade. Whether or not you attend a particular class date, ALL Assignments are still due on the Blackboard posted and classroom announced due dates—regardless as to why you needed to miss a class.
Each required class meeting will be worth up to 3 Attendance/Participation Points, with 93 Total Attendance Points Possible-- (31 face to face classes worth up to 3 points each). *[Note: We will not meet on Monday, September 2nd due to the Labor Day Holiday, nor on Wednesday, November 27th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.] If a student misses an entire class, no matter the reason, as absences are not determined whether or not they are excused or unexcused, the student will lose All 3 of the Attendance/Participation points for that day’s class. Any student who arrives late to class for 1 or more minutes but is still able to be present for Roll Call or signing the Attendance sheet before it is collected, or anyone who leaves class early by even 1 minute before class is dismissed, will lose 1 of these 3 Attendance/Participation points for that class. If a student misses more than 40 minutes of a class meeting, which is half of the class meeting time, will lose 2 Attendance/Participation points of 3 points possible for that class meeting.
If a student’s name is called by Dr. Blakey to respond to a question or asked an opinion, it is okay not to know or have an answer, and simply reply that they are not sure of how to answer or something to this nature. However, if the student does not respond at all, and therefore will be assumed to not be paying attention in class, that student will lose 1 of the 3 Attendance/Participation points for that class meeting as well. What is important is trying, and not whether the student knows the correct information. The Learning Process by nature involves the expectation of making errors, which is one critical way in how we learn. What is most appreciated by your professor is that each student works on their own learning, doing their personal best, and not focusing on how another student is performing. Learning works best by taking a risk of possibly being wrong and then working on correcting one’s assumptions and information, supporting a Growth Mindset-- where learning progresses by focusing on just doing one’s best, knowing it’s okay to make mistakes along the way, and where perfection or being the best is distracting and unrealistic for learning. Embracing a Growth Mindset is the goal, (rather than a fixed mindset-- which instead is more focused in comparison to others with a focus on who has a higher or lower grade, and fearing failure, which can all disrupt the learning process). A Growth Mindset focus can make learning and performance become an exciting, successful, and productive journey! Effort is the goal, and learning from one’s successes and mistakes, not perfection.
There will be optional weekly Office Hour meetings available for all registered students, which will take place by having an optional 30-minute meeting right after each class, from 11:50 am – 12:50 pm every Tuesday for each of the 16 weeks of the course. There is no requirement to attend any of these office hour meetings, and therefore no course attendance credit will exist for attending (nor any penalty for missing) any of these real time live Office Hour sessions. However, it is highly recommended that you meet with Dr. Blakey at least once so that she can get to know you better and therefore help you to better succeed in this course.
(B) Homework Assignments = 10% of Course Grade. This grade will be based on the percentage of Total Homework Points Earned divided by the Total Homework Points Possible, and then this percentage score will be converted into a letter grade. All Achieve Quizzes, Blackboard additional Homework Assignments, and additional Homework Handouts during Class will combine and be worth this 10% of the course grade. All Optional Extra Credit Opportunities will be added to this Total Homework set of points. All Homework, plus any Extra Credit work, must all be turned in on time, either in person or online, depending on how the assignment was originally assigned, and handed in on time to receive any credit—No Exceptions! Homework will be distributed either in class, through your Achieve online account, or through a content area of your Blackboard course account as “Other Homework (Besides Achieve). Homework handed out in class must be returned in class, and online homework must be returned online, either through the Achieve Grade Center, or emailed to Professor Blakey if the homework was through Blackboard’s “Other Homework (Besides Achieve) online content area of Blackboard.
(C) Four (4) Exams will be scheduled = 80% Total. Each of the four exams will be worth 20% each to total this 80% of your Course Grade. Please clearly note that there will be No Make-Up Exams no matter what the good reason for missing an exam. [Only on a rare exception determined by Dr. Blakey to be absolutely unavoidable, such as an unavoidable serious illness or sudden medical emergency, will a prompt make up exam be scheduled in the Testing Center. A rare make-up exam allowance will be solely up to the discretion of Dr. Blakey. Consideration of the fairness of a make-up exam to both Dr. Blakey and fellow classmates will be of top consideration. If a make-up exam is granted, and the student does not comply with the original deadline to take the makeup exam at the ACC Testing Center, No second chance will be granted, period.]
All exams will take place on one scheduled exam date during a regularly scheduled class meeting, and will take the entire 80-minute class meeting time. A student who completes their exam early before the class meeting time has ended will be free to leave the classroom once they have turned in their exam and scantron scoring sheet to Dr. Blakey. Each student is responsible to bring one green scantron sheet to class for each exam, plus 1-2 pencils (#2 lead pencils). Your Course Schedule at the end of this Syllabus, which will additionally be posted separately in your Blackboard account, will have all scheduled Exam Dates. Exams will take place during class in the classroom and will be monitored by Dr. Blakey—(again, unless a student has been pre-approved for a SAS approved Testing Center exam accommodation). No exams will be allowed to continue after the regular class meeting time of 80 minutes has ended.
Any student suspected of cheating during the exam will not be allowed to complete their exam and a grade of “F” will be scored for that exam. Dr. Blakey might not allow this student to continue in the course. If cheating is suspected for a student during yet a second exam time during this course, the student will absolutely not be allowed to remain in the course—No Exceptions.
Each exam will contain Multiple Choice questions, as well as possible True/False and Short Answer questions. There typically will be no essay questions on any exam—although Dr. Blakey reserves the discretion to change this exam format if announced in advance of any actual exam date. During the 80-minute exam period, no student can leave the classroom and re-enter the class to continue with their exam—unless the student brings the following to the front of the class to Dr. Blakey and asks for permission to take a short break before they leave the classroom-- their exam, scantron score sheet, and all electronic devices. Failure to follow these procedures will result in that student’s exam ending, and the exam picked up by Dr. Blakey and graded to where the student left off before they left the classroom “without permission”.
There may be additional Extra Credit Questions on any particular exam, and if so, will be announced prior to taking the exam. Please regularly check your separately posted Updated Course Schedule (listed separately in Blackboard) for all dates and times that each exam is scheduled, as well as any updated changes to homework assignments and homework due dates, as announced both in class, and also as a Blackboard Announcement. All exams are on the honor system whereby each student is expected to complete their own exam without any assistance, to include not glancing over to your classmate’s exam.
Your Final Course Grade will be based on the percentage of Total Points Earned out of the Total Points Possible for each of the course sections A, B, and C above.
Grade “A” = 90% or higher of total grade points earned;
Grade “B” = 80% - 89% of total grade points earned;
Grade “C” = 70% - 79% of total grade points earned;
Grade “D” = 60% - 69% of total grade points earned; and
Grade “F” = 59% or less of total grade points earned.
