Course Requirements

An experience external to the college for an advanced student involving a written agreement between the College and an employing law office or legal agency. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes while employed in the legal environment at least 20 hours per week.  The objectives will involve the performance of specific occupational outcomes normally performed by paralegals.  Internshipswith private employers (e.g. lawyers in private practice) must be paid.  Internships with government agencies or not-for-profit organizations can be paid or unpaid. This course must be taken during the semester in which the student will graduate from the program, unless the student will graduate in August, in which case the course must be completed in the spring semester before graduation.  This course may not be taken in a semester when the student has more than four Paralegal courses remaining in the Program.

  • Course Evaluation System:

    • The student’s grade in the course will consist of a combination of a grade given by the instructor, a grade given by the workplace supervisor, and the completion of Weekly Journals.  The grade given by the instructor will reflect the timely and effective completion of the objectives set forth in the Course Calendar. The grade given by the workplace supervisor will reflect how well the student achieved the planned objectives and goals as well as the student’s overall effectiveness in the work environment.

       

      B.        Total Course points will be computed as follows:

      (1)       Employer’s Final Grade…………………………………………...  200 points

      (2)       Twelve Weekly Journals (10pts each)……………………………   120 points

      (3)       Instructor’s Final Grade…………………………………………...   180 points

      Total Points                                                                                                    500 Points
    • The final letter grade in the course will be based upon the percentage of total available points received.  

 

 

 


Readings

Black's Law Dictionary is recommended, but not required.  The intern and the employer shall determine what resources will be necessary during the internship.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

 

  1. Course-Level Student Learning Outcomes:      At the end of the course, the student will exhibit adequate competency in those areas set forth in the goals and objectives identified by the instructor, the student and the student’s workplace supervisor. 
  2. Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes: 
  1. To ensure that students understand a broad range of legal concepts and terms.
  2. To ensure that students are able to perform legal research and identify and apply the salient holdings of appellate decisions to related fact patterns.
  3. To ensure students ability to apply legal concepts to changing fact patterns.
  4. To ensure students understanding of the basis for, and ability to draft, the documents used in a broad range of legal environments.
  5. To encourage students to develop the initiative and work habits that will make them successful in a broad range of legal environments.
  6. Ultimately, to prepare the student to perform well as a paralegal in a broad range of law office / law division environments.
