COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE
To survive and thrive, today’s managers have to think and act strategically. Today’s customers are well educated aware of their options, and demanding of excellence. For this reason, managers today must think constantly about how to build a capable workforce and manage in a way that delivers the goods and services that provide the best possible value to the customer. To this standard managers and organizations must succeed. This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the theories, principles, concepts and essentials of management. This course also covers how good managers make organizations successful by building competitive advantages in the forms of cost competitiveness, quality, speed and innovation.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1) Submit a Resume for 5 extra credit points added to the total of your exam scores.
2) Read the text book chapters before you come to class.
3) Class participation is mandatory in this class. Approximately 20% of your grade will come from in-class work.
4) Students are highly encouraged to keep up and on schedule. Homework or extra credit projects may be graded for extra credit or as a sign of effort (at the discretion of instructor).
5) Students are required to get the help they need in a timely fashion (do not wait till the end of the semester). If for some reason, your messages are not returned in a timely manner, it is up to you to follow up and get help. Make sure you include your name, section number and the name of your class in all communications. Sometimes my schedule is hectic so don’t waste time waiting, call again if you don’t get the help you need.
READING
It is important to read the chapters carefully before you come to class. Also, all the test questions come from the textbook.
EXAMS
All of the exams are multiple choice. The student will be allowed to use pencils, scantron, ruled paper, and any calculator (you probably won’t need it).. Since this is an introductory course, many of the exam questions will be definitions. There will also be several theory questions on each exam and not much history. Exams are scored as the percentage correct. It is up to the student to check that the grades are posted correctly. Please keep your copy of your test scores as they have been known to disappear. On some exams short answer or essay questions might be available for extra credit.
Late Exams
It is extremely rare for a student to be successful in the course once they get behind. Therefore if you take an exam after the assigned time and date, 2 points may be deducted from your test score for everyday afterthe exam date that you take it.The last date to take the exam will be before the next class. You will only be allowed one makeup test per semester and arrangements must be made in ADVANCE of the regularly scheduled time for the test. Makeup tests will be taken at Rio Grande Campus Testing Center
Extra Credit
Completion of a resume is worth 5 extra credit points to be added to your exam scores. MANY Additional extra credit opportunities will exist throughout the class. Class participation is highly appreciated and often rewarded! Quality participation is better than quantity. Everyone can learn from anyone!
