Course Requirements
Catalog Description & Prerequisites
This course introduces the principles and techniques required to play the classical guitar through weekly one-hour private lessons and four repertory performance classes. Lessons will focus on correct posture, technique, reading music, and classical guitar repertoire. Students must receive instructor approval to enroll and must be enrolled as a Music Major at ACC. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite is a C or better in MUAP 1242 Guitar Level 2.
Course Subjects
Course Purposes & Instructional Methodology
Students will be expected to practice classical guitar at least 1 hour, a minimum of 6 days per week. Practice rooms are available at the Highland Campus for daily practice. In consultation with the instructor, students may perform in the weekly seminar on Fridays but are not required to do so. Students are required to perform an end of semester jury for faculty.
Music required for the end of semester jury:
- Two pieces or individual movements equivalent to level of the Royal Conservatory of Music - Classical Guitar Repertoire and Etudes level 3.
- Technical requirements – these do not need to be performed at the jury, but must be demonstrated during applied lessons. Two octave major and minor scales, arpeggios and selections from Warm-up routine II.

Student Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of the first semester of applied guitar, the student will be able to:
- Play with technique, knowledge and skills which foster a practical understanding of music rudiments and harmony
- Begin to obtain knowledge of standard guitar repertoire
- Develop music sight reading skills
- Compare and contrast the different musical periods and styles as they relate to guitar repertoire
- Perform two octave major and minor scales and arpeggios
- Perform two pieces or movements at the end of semester jury. Memorization is not required. Difficulty level of pieces is described under Instructional Methodology.
