Course Requirements

Required Texts: Assigned according to individual needs and goals. Students should expect to purchase approximately $100 of etudes, solos, and method books over the course of a semester.

Trumpet texts, solo literature, etude books, mutes, mouthpieces, and recordings will be selected based on individual student’s needs and goals. All students must acquire (or download) a tuner, a metronome and a recording device.  Students should  expect to spend roughly 100 dollars per semester for course materials.

Repertoire may include:

Concerto in Eb by Joseph Haydn

Concerto in Eb by Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Concerto for Trumpet by Oskar Bohme

Concerto for Trumpet by Vladimir Peskin

Sonata for Trumpet by Paul Hindemith

It is strongly recommended that students join the International Trumpet Guild.  It is only 30 dollars per year for the electronic version (recommended) and the materials.  It is the best 30 dollars you will spend all year.  http://www.trumpetguild.org/join/join.htm

 

 

Course Description:

2 credits, and 1 contact hour per week

Weekly one hour private lesson

 

The instructor will recommend musical materials appropriate to the skill level and musical goals of  the individual student. Students are expected to maintain a musical practice routine of at least an hour a day. Students will perform an end-of-semester jury with a collaborative pianist. .

 

Course Rationale:

Throughout the history of music, the most effective form of study of a musical instrument has required individual instruction from an accomplished performer/teacher. One to one instruction permits the modelling performance for the student a targeted way and the collaborative development of strategies to advance personal musical goals and techniques.

 

Prerequisites:

To sign up for Trumpet Applied Lessons students must be concurrently enrolled in one or more classes of Non-Applied Music or Music Business Performance Technology. Students must receive department approval which begins with a call to (512) 223-4806.  For lesson approval, contact the instructor to agree on a lesson day and time. There is an addition Music Lesson Fee of 160 dollars.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Demonstrate musicianship and performance skills through student jury (end of term) and student recital performances.

  • Demonstrate performance of scales and scale patterns including major, minor (natural, melodic, harmonic, Dorian), Mixolydian, and whole tone.
  • Demonstrate refinement of proper breathing, articulation, flexibility and tone through performance in lessons, chamber ensemble rehearsals, concerts, and recitals. 
  • Produce a pleasing sound from E3 to Eb5
  • Demonstrate fluency in double and triple tonguing.
  • Demonstrate increased understanding of various musical styles through performance in and outside of lessons. 
  • Demonstrate development as an improviser through performance during lessons. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe practice and performance techniques to maintain musculoskeletal health and prevent injury.

The student and teacher will collaborate to develop individual musical goals and a progressive strategy to achieve those goals.
