Course Requirements
There are no prerequistes for this class. This is an online class with 10 lessons assigned. See course outline for more information about topics covered each lesson, the lessons will consist of a quiz, discussion post and for some lessons a paper, see full syllabus for more details.
Readings
- Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy; 11th edition; Gerald Corey.
- Student Manual for Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy, 10th edition; Gerald Corey (you do not need to purchase this as all needed materials will be provided on Blackboard, however if you would like a paper copy you can use an older edition of the student manual. The page numbers may be different but the assignments are the same)
- Man’s Search for Meaning; Viktor Frankl (The book by Frankl can often be found at college and public libraries. The Frankl book is short and you will refer to it in one lesson and be required to incorporate what you learned from the book into your papers.)
Course Subjects
This course is designed to help students gain a general knowledge of several current and classical counseling theories. The course will cover the key concepts, practical applications, and techniques associated with the theories. This course will also give you the opportunity to clarify your own theoretical stance and begin to develop your style as a counselor.
Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives
- Identify the significant components of 10 theories.
- Create and explain a personal theoretical stance of counseling.
- Demonstrate active listening skills.
- Integrate the various theories and demonstrate, through a written paper, an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the approaches.
