Course Requirements

Course Description: This course is an introduction to Texas state and local government.  The course includes an introduction to a framework for analyzing Texas government and politics, the constitutional basis for Texas government and politics, the processes used in Texas government, the institutions of Texas government, and the policies of Texas government.

Texas Course Outcome: Upon completion of this course students will be able to analyze the context of Texas politics, the institutions, and the process of government in the state.

Assignments:  Each student will be responsible for completing 4 tests, 4 Journal Entries, & 1 Political Debate. (See Deadline Sheet & Syllabus for specifics)

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Objectives for the Course:

1. Describe the nature of the Texas political system as it relates to its citizens, political groups, and political institutions.

2. Discuss the principles expressed in the Texas Constitution & explain how it guides the institutions; specifically, the Texas Legislature and the Governor.

3. Analyze the Texas political process & explain how it relates to governmental institutions & how the institutions influence the process.

4. Determine & discuss the importance of political participation as it relates to political parties, interest groups, and voting.

5. Summarize the components of the criminal justice system specifically problems with mental illness, overcrowding, the death penalty & misconduct by district attorneys
