Course Requirements
Common Course Description: A general introduction to the visual arts designed to create an appreciation of the vocabulary, media, techniques, and purposes of the creative process. Students will critically interpret and evaluate works of art within formal, cultural, and historical contexts.
Prerequisites: College-level Reading and Writing Requirements. Students will need strong, college-level reading, writing and study skills to succeed in this course. Students are expected to read approximately 450 pages of the textbook and may be obliged to read outside articles and write essays. Students are expected to observe standard English grammar and spelling rules in writing assignments.
Course Rationale: The purpose of Art Appreciation is to provide students with an understanding of the diverse ways in which cultures construct and represent their realities. Through thematic examination of both historical and contemporary art, students will acquire formal analysis skills to describe works of art and techniques of art production. Further building upon formal analysis, students will critically interpret and contextualize visual art forms.
This class fulfills the Creative Arts requirement of the Core Curriculum outline.

Common Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Apply art terminology as it specifically relates to works of art.
- Demonstrate knowledge of art elements and principles of design.
- Differentiate between the processes and materials used in the production of various works of art.
- Critically interpret, evaluate, and contextualize works of art
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of arts on culture.

- Explain how formal and compositional properties express and convey content.
- Recognize and identify differences in styles and art forms.

Grading System:
- Projects: earn 15% each = 30% of course grade
- Formal Art Analysis Essay
- Final Project - TBD
- These projects count as summative exams that measure learning objectives at or around midterm and again at the end of the semester.
- Weekly Chapter Quizzes = 30% of course grade
- You’ll have a weekly reading assignment and reading quizzes that assess your reading comprehension. Quizzes are typically 20 questions long and timed at 30 to 35 minutes. Question types may include multiple choice, multiple answer, Truth and False, and short essay questions.
- Weekly Assignments (In-Class / Homework) = 30% of course grade
- You will be issued assignments to practice skills or apply knowledge you’re learning in class. These assignments will reinforce what you learned in your reading. These assignments may be assigned as in-class exercises or take-home assignments.
- Attendance + Participation – 10% of course grade
- Attendance is marked each meeting day.
