Course Requirements

The course is divided into five modules:

  • Each module will have a quiz covering information from that section of material. The quiz will be offered online for lecture courses.

  • In the middle of the semester, a mid-term exam (150 points) will be given to assess learning.

  • At the end of the semester there is a comprehensive final examination (225 points) covering material from all the units. 

  • The mid-term and final exams will be based on assigned reading from the required textbook and course materials. Classroom  based courses will take the exams during their scheduled class time; Distance learning courses will take their exams via DE Proctoring

  • In addition to the quizzes and the exams, there will be graded homework assignments or activities that are part of the course grade. 

  • Access to high speed, reliable internet is important for the quizzes and exams.  Exams are taken using a proctored testing service. 


Readings

Course lecture content will be derived from the required textbook and follow the course schedule provided. 

Required Materials:

Frucht, Suzanne. Medical Terminology Get Connected.  3rd edition. Pearson Publishing. 2020  

The textbook will be provided to you as part of the First Day Access program.

Course Subjects

This course is divided into Five (5) Modules which focus on the following subjects: 

Module 1 - Introduction to Medical Terminology

Module 2 - Medical Terms related to the Musculoskeletal, Gastrointestinal, and Integumentary Body Systems

MID-TERM EXAM

Module 3 - Medical Terms related to the Nervous, Ear, Eye and Endocrine Body Systems

Module 4 - Medicalt Terms related to the Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Blood and Immune Body Systems

Module 5 - Medical Terms related to the Urinary, Male and Female Reproductive Body Systems

FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

On completion of the course, the student will have the ability to:  

  1. Describe the roles of the word component parts utilized in analyzing and constructing medical terms. 
  2. Divide medical terms into their component parts.
  3. Build medical terms using their component parts.
  4. Identify and explain prefixes, roots and suffixes associated with each designated body system.
  5. Spell medical terms correctly
  6. Convert terms from singular to plural form
  7. Identify the major structures associated with each body system using correct medical terminology.
  8. Describe the basic function of the different body systems using correct medical terminology. 
  9. Recognize the meaning of designated pathological conditions affecting each body system.
  10. Discuss the medical terms used in surgical, clinical and laboratory procedures related to each body system.   
  11. Recall the meanings of abbreviations associated with different body systems
  12. Interpret medical words used in context
  13. Recall newly gained knowledge for practical application

Technology Requirements

Technology and testing requirements for HPRS courses

In order to test online, students will need a strong, reliable internet connection, a PC or MAC with a working camera, a Chromebook, or laptop with a working webcam.  Students will only need these electronic devices on test days.  If students do not own one of these devices, they should plan to borrow one from a friend, neighbor or family member for use on test days.   If students do not have these required devices, they will need to contact their instructor.  These are the minimal technology requirements for online testing.
