Course Requirements

You must be TSI complete or have passed MATD 0485 with a grade of C or better at ACC to take this course.

 

You should set up your ACC email and check it frequently. I will send you all the information through your ACC email. You should also check the course page on ACC Blackboard, frequently,  by clicking on "Blackboard" under "Students" on ACC home page.

Regular attendance at the online sessions is required.

There are 5 units and one test for each unit in this course. The tests will be done online Using Respondus Lockdown Browser to proctor you. All exams are equally weighted. Grades will be calculated as follows:

  • Homework 10%
  • Participation / Group Work 5%
  • Projects 10%
  • 5 tests (may be given at the Testing Center) 75%
  • Total: 100% 

Readings

This is an online course and you need access to the internet, a good laptop or iPad a webcam, a scientific calculator and at least 12 hours per week to study and do the homework for this course. If you need to you can borrow an iPad from ACC at https://www.austincc.edu/students/student-technology-services.

The fee for accessing an e-textbook is included in your tuition for the course. Therefore you will be able to access the book online from the first class.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Objectives: 1) Increase/improve your quantitative literacy. 2) Provide you with an opportunity to experience mathematics as an intellectual exercise and a way of thinking. 3) Provide you with an opportunity to appreciate the visual and intellectual beauty of mathematics.

 

Student Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

1. Apply the language and notation of sets. 

2. Determine the validity of an argument or statement and provide mathematical evidence.  

3. Solve problems in mathematics of finance. 

4. Demonstrate fundamental probability/counting techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems.  

5. Interpret and analyze various representations of data. 

6. Demonstrate the ability to choose and analyze mathematical models to solve problems from real-world settings, including, but not limited to, personal finance, health literacy, and civic engagement.

7. Understand that mathematics is an evolving discipline, interrelated with human culture, and understand its connections to other disciplines.
