Course Requirements
Course Description
German 1412, a second semester German course, is continuing the study of fundamentals of German: conversation, basic writing, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary building, grammar and culture. We will study Chapters 4 through 6 of Sag Mal: An Introduction to German Language and Culture, 3rd ed.
- Credit Hours: 4
- Weekly Class Meeting Time: 2 hours
- Online Activity Hours per week: 10 - 14 hours
Prerequisites
As stated in the ACC Catalog, to be enrolled in the course, you must have credit for a four hour (or greater) college or university course equivalent to, or at a higher level than ACC German 1411 with a grade of at least a C. High school, community/continuing education credit, conversation course credit and previous knowledge are not acceptable substitutes for the required prerequisite.
You must present proof of this credit (in the form of the appropriate transcript or grade report or an ACC printout) to your instructor by the 12th day* of ACC classes for the 16 week session and the 4th day* in the summer, or you will be withdrawn from this course and may risk losing any refund.
If this is the only course for which you are registered and you are withdrawing, this may constitute a withdrawal from the institution. (See Catalog)
If you wish to challenge this course by examination, you must withdraw by the prerequisite deadline.
**This is the twelfth/fourth day from the beginning of the semester for all ACC courses, not the twelfth/fourth day of your class.

Please note:
- The required material for this course is an online access code to the Sag Mal SuperSite which includes a digital version of the text. The optional recommended bundle includes this online access, E-book, AND a physical copy of the text. Thus, the recommended bundle would be purchased in place of (and NOT in addition to) the required bundle.
- Digital access to the SuperSite is purchased for specific periods of time (6 or 36 months).
These same materials are used for four semesters: GERM 1411, GERM 1412, GERM 2311 and GERM 2312.
Course Subjects
Common Course Objectives:
The main objective of this course is to develop competencies that align with the general education goals of critical thinking, interpersonal skills, civic and cultural awareness, personal responsibility, and written, oral and visual communication, in the German language, at an appropriate level. The ability to understand and communicate and comprehend German will develop along with the knowledge of the vocabulary, grammatical structures of the language, and exploration of how culture shapes communication. Two to three hours a day should be dedicated to the study of German.
At the end of German 1412, students should be able to do the following:
CRITICAL THINKING:
- comprehend a passage in the German language using a variety of reading or listening strategies
- answer questions and draw inferences about passages
- synopsize and synthesize the information from passages heard or read
- make comparisons and find contrasts among the cultures of German-speaking regions and your own
- reflect on what was read or heard and mention some of its implications and applications
- evaluate the information
TEAMWORK (Interpersonal Skills):
- complete a variety of language-based activities working in pairs and small groups.
- demonstrate the ability to negotiate meaning to complete language-based activities
- demonstrate the ability to work in groups to achieve a common goal
- demonstrate the ability to consider different points of view and work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (Civic and Cultural Awareness):
- compare and contrast different perspectives on cultural issues, customs, and traditions after reading or listening to passages in the German language
- demonstrate some intercultural competence by correctly using formal and informal speech, changing registers as needed, and using gestures
- mention some differences among the German-speaking regions
- demonstrate knowledge of current events in the German-speaking world
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- show time management skills by successfully completing tasks on time
- acquire effective study habits for language learning
COMMUNICATION (Written, Oral and Visual Communication):
- show effective written and spoken communication in German at the appropriate level using a variety of strategies and adopting the appropriate type of speech.
- use listening strategies such as listening for the main idea and for specific details and asking for clarification.
- exhibit conceptual understanding and control of courtesy expressions and appropriate kinesics when speaking in German
- interpret and express ideas through written, oral and visual communication
