Course Requirements

Section Tests*____________________________________________________________________20%

Two section tests will be given using Blackboard proctoring services.  The tests will be multiple-choice in format.    Students missing testing periods will not be given an opportunity to make up the exam except under the most unusual circumstances (documentation of situation required).  Tests will cover the following chapter sections:

 

Test 1 : (ACE Guide to Personal Training)                                                           10 %

(chapters 1 - 9)

Test 2 : (ACE Guide to Personal Training)                                                           10 %

(chapters 10- 16)

 

Final Exam (comprehensive):______________________________________________________20 %

The final exam is comprehensive and will include selected questions from the previous section tests.

This exam will not be curved based on class averages.  It will also be proctored by Blackboard services.

Lab Grade______________________________________________________________________35%

Labs for FITT 1401 meet every Tuesday from 6:00pm – 8:30pm in room 1169A at the Riverside Campus. You will receive a separate syllabus outlining lab requirements at the first lab session.

 

Client Assignment________________________________________________________________15%

Each student will be assigned a fictitious client, which has been screened for health and physical limitations.  Based on the information, the student will design a 16 week program for the fictitious client using ACE guidelines.  The final program submitted will be detailed as a typed, double-spaced paper submitted to the instructor.  The student will also be required to present a 10-minute overview of their program to the instructor creating a slide show-based presentation.  Missing the assigned presentation due date will result in a “zero” for that component of the assignment.  All late papers will receive a five point deduction for each day past from the due date. 

 

Attendance/Class Participation______________________________________________________10% All will have weekly quizzes.  The responses to these questions will be recorded and tabulated to calculate this grade component.  All quizzes will be posted on Monday and to be submitted no later than Sunday (midnight) of each week.  You can work on and save the answers for the quizzes during the week before final submission.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Objectives/Rationale:  This class is designed to present a comprehensive overview in health and fitness with a strong focus on personal training.  The class also introduces topics for the Personal Fitness Trainer major that will be covered at greater depth in more advanced FITT courses.  The class can also assist in preparing the student for the national Personal Trainer certification exam offered through the American Council on Exercise.  In particular, the student will learn concepts in the areas of:

 

  1. physiological adaptations through aerobic, anaerobic and resistive training,
  2. exercise recommendation principles
  3. nutrition
  4. legal aspects of personal training
  5. human anatomy and human physiology.

 

The student will be able to:

I.     create a comprehensive exercise program using sound principles for healthy adults

II.    orally articulate exercise concepts and techniques

III.   calculate body composition, ideal weight loss, and target heart rate
