COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Class Participation

This course can help you become a more strategic learner if you take responsibility for your own learning and engage the process. The instructor will determine this part of the grade based on your preparedness and participation in the course.  Using your aseptic technique skills and knowledge of performing a manual TPN CSP from Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique (SCAT), we will explore the use of the Automated BAXA TPN Compounder.  The virtual lab activities are designed to maximize the value of our time together and leverage the educational benefits of having a cohort of peer to learn alongside., so do yourself and your classmates a favor by coming prepared and contributing to the learning experience during the virtual discussions.

There are five components of success:

  • Regular and timely class participation in discussions and completions of work is expected of all students.  If attendance or compliance with other course policies is unsatisfactory, the instructor may withdraw students from the class.
  • Advanced reading and preparation of assigned materials - Review the TPN calculation lecture in Blackboard prior to the hands-on lab portion of the course. This will help hardwire your math skills required for TPN compounding in the adult, pediatric and pediatric populations during lab.  Complete the Practice TPN’s assigned in the Adult TPN and Pediatric Modules prior to lab.  I will set up a virtual time to meet to go over calculations.
  • Well-formed comments during lab discussions. Informed and well-formulated comments during lab discussions is and expectation.  USP Chapter <797> are minimum requirements in sterile injectable compounding.  We will discuss best practices during lab.  I won’t be able to address specific facility issues during lab. The time we have in lab is limited and extended discussions regarding interpretation of specific September 2021 USP Chapter <797> UPDATES may continue on our course blog.
  • Mandatory attendance and punctuality for hands on lab component of the course - The hands-on lab process validations are designed to maximize the value of our time together and leverage the educational benefits of having a cohort of peers to learn alongside, so do yourself and your course participants a favor by coming prepared and contributing to the learning experience during lab.
  • Professionalism.  Our lab sessions are a time and place for learning, where all students are expected to engage the learning process and not disrupt this opportunity for themselves or others.  Behaving respectfully toward everyone in the course means engaging in the learning activities at hand and refraining from doing anything not directly related to them (e.g., using cell phones/tablets/computers, carrying on side conversations, etc). See “Technical Standards and Essential Functions” below.

Lab hands-on component of the course – Mandatory LIVE 2-day hands on portion of the course

Inclement weather – emergency closure:  In cases of emergency where the Eastview Campus is closed on the scheduled lab dates, refer to the course announcements and check you email for updates.  It is your responsibility to communicate with me in an emergent closure situation.  You can text or call in cases of emergency to 512-779-6644.

Stay up-to-date

Unless otherwise stated, all assignments, class materials, supplemental resources, grades, email, and announcements will be posted on the course Blackboard site.  You are responsible for keeping up with information and communication via Blackboard.  There are TPN calculations you need to keep up with before we meet for the LIVE 2-day LAB. I recommend check Blackboard announcements daily.

Professional Code of Conduct

Treat others with respect. Students will be held accountable for professional behavior during the course.  It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the instructor throughout the duration of the course.  You may contact me through email and I will respond within 24- 48 hours.

Communicate with me

The best way to reach me is via email at shannon.bui@austincc.edu.  If you have questions or concerns about the course, need some help with a difficult concept or assignment, or anything else, I am always willing to listen and do what I can to help you.  Part of taking responsibility for your own learning in this course is staying in touch with me about any issues you may encounter that could affect your academic performance.  Don’t wait until it is too late to seek help!

Some things to keep in mind:

  • If you have a question that the whole class would benefit from, please ask during lab.
  • If you have a personal question (e.g. regarding grades) that lends itself to an extended discussion, please see me during the lab lunch break or after lab concludes for the day. Also, you can make an appointment with me and I will send a link to a private virtual meeting room.
  • Instructor E-mail Response Time: It is ACC policy for instructors to respond to a student's e-mail within 24 to 48 hours Monday through Friday during business hours. If a student e-mails an instructor in the off-hours or weekends, e-mails will be responded to the next business day.
  • Email Etiquette: All emails between professor and student must be written in a professional manner.  In the subject line include the course description PHRA 2073/2373 and reason for email. (e.g., PHRA 2073/2373 Blackboard Assignment question). You should use a salutation (Professor Bui) and end with your full name.  Correct punctuation, capitalization, etc. must be used.  Email communication should not have texting shorthand.

Statement on Privacy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects confidentiality of students’ educational records. Grades cannot be provided by faculty over the phone, by e-mail, or to a fellow student.

Recording Policy

To ensure compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), student recording of class lectures or other activities is generally prohibited without the explicit written permission of the instructor and notification of other students enrolled in the class section.  Exceptions are made for approved accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Recording of lectures and other class activities may be made by faculty to facilitate instruction, especially for classes taught remotely through Blackboard Collaborate or another platform.  Participation in such activities implies consent for the student to be recorded during the instructional activity.  Such recordings are intended for educational and academic purposes only.

Use of ACC email

All College e-mail communication to students will be sent solely to the student’s ACCmail account, with the expectation that such communications will be read in a timely fashion. ACC will send important information and will notify students of any college- related emergencies using this account. Students should only expect to receive email communication from their instructor using this account.  Likewise, students should use their ACCmail account when communicating with instructors and staff.  Information about ACC email accounts, including instructions for accessing it, are available at:  http://www.austincc.edu/help/accmail/questions-and-answers

Instructions for activating an ACC email account can be found at http://www.austincc.edu/accmail/index.php.

Course Requirements and Policies

Attendance/Class Participation

Attendance at both laboratory sessions in their entirety is mandatory. No exceptions.

Dress Code

The student will be expected to adhere to the dress code.  The dress code for the course is what a student would expect in an actual hospital environment.  During lab, students are required to wear medical scrubs and close-toed shoes (tennis shoes or similar are preferred). Medical scrubs are available at any medical uniform store. Please come dressed in scrubs and appropriate footwear for BOTH lab sessions.

If you show up to lab in makeup, artificial nails, nail polish, without scrubs or open-toed footwear you will be asked to leave and you will be considered absent for that lab.
