Course Description

Music appreciation is a foundation course designed to enhance students’ enjoyment and understanding of music. In this course, we will introduce the musical elements, discuss the style of music in all the musical eras, and build listening and analytical skills. The bulk of the course is focused on “Western Art Music.” No musical background is required or expected.

 


Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: 

  • Recognize the stylistic and aesthetic characteristics of music in various musical styles
  • Identify and describe the technical aspects of a piece of music
  • Analyze the elements and structures of music using music terminology 
  • Communicate their understanding and feeling about music to others 
  • Actively listen to music of all kinds
  • Develop a basis from which to continue being nourished and fulfilled by music throughout their life.

Course Requirements

Orientation and Syllabus Quiz
Orientation for this course is available on Blackboard. Students are required to read the information on “start here” and complete the syllabus quiz by October 17, Tuesday, at 11:59pm. Students who do not meet this requirement may be dropped from the class. If you are unable to complete this requirement, please contact the instructor immediately. 

It is crucially important for all students to check ACC email daily and Blackboard on a regular basis (at least twice per week). All assignments will be posted with due dates on Blackboard.

Grading Policy

Syllabus quiz (5%)
Syllabus quiz must be completed before October 17, Tuesday, at 11:59pm The quiz will be available on Blackboard. 

1 Exam(15%)
The online exam on Ch. 1-12 will be available on October 27, Friday, from 10am to 11:59pm. Students are required to complete the exam before it closes. There is no make-up exam unless a student has a justified reason and informs the instructor by email in advance

1 Written assignment (8%)
Students are required to complete and submit this written assignment by October 29, Sunday, at 11:59pm. Students will be asked to make comparisons of two different arrangements of the same music provided by the instructor and write a 300-500 words essay. The full instructions will be available on Blackboard. 

Chapter & Listening quizzes(32%)
All the quizzes will be taken on Blackboard
. Students need to complete the reading/listening assignments and online quizzes by the due dates. Students are encouraged to complete the chapter quizzes while doing the reading assignments. 

Two Concert Reports(40%)
Students are required to attend TWO full-length classical concerts and submit a 750-1000 words review for each event. The concerts, which one of them needs to be a live performance, have to relate to the materials covered in the course. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. All papers are submitted to “SafeAssign” for integrity review.

Proof of attendance may be in the form of ticket stub and/or concert program, as well as a picture of yourself at the venue. The proof of attendance must be included in your report submissions on Blackboard and ONLY electronic submissions of this assignment will be accepted. The reports are due at 11:59pm on Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. Late submission is NOT acceptable

Required Online Access:

  • Online access to “The Enjoyment of Music” is required. This website provides all the materials needed to take the course; e-book, musical examples, documentaries, listening guides and resource materials. 
  • Course Materials:  All course materials are embedded in Blackboard, however, before the materials can be accessed, you must purchase the access under the tab, “eBook & Course Materials”. 
  • Students need to have Total Access no later than October 18, Wednesday, at 11:59pm.
