COURSE RATIONALE AND DESCRIPTION

This course requires students to work as an engineering team.

Knowledge of GDT is expected prior to taking this class and tolerance analysis and GDT calculations will be learned in-depth. Use of a product data management system and proper numbering convetion will also be employed.

COURSE RATIONALE

Students will understand whole machine design and the impact of changes, tolerances, material choices before final product is released to ensure mass manufacturing capabilities, less scrap and more cost effective principals of design.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Production of detail and assembly drawings of machines, threads, gears, cams, tolerances and limit dimensioning, surface finishes, and precision drawings. This course is a study of machine design dimensioning and tolerancing (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) using ASME/ANSI and ISO standards. Also, an introduction to producing part drawings from parametric solid models is provided.

Instructional Methodology

Due to the many new and exciting topics and expanding on Inventor, it is VERY IMPORTANT TO ATTEND CLASS.

We will be working as a TEAM, so please plan on attending class so your teammates are not stopped in their progress of assignments.

ACC EMAIL AND BLACKBOARD

EMAIL

All College e-mail communication to students will be sent solely to the student’s college email account, with the expectation that such communications will be read in a timely fashion. ACC will send important information and will notify you of any college related emergencies using this account.  Students should expect to receive email communication from their instructor using this account unless other arrangements have been made.  Likewise, it is suggested that students use their ACCmail account when communicating with instructors and staff.  Instructions for activating an ACCmail account can be found at http://www.austincc.edu/accmail/index.php.

BLACKBOARD (Bb)

The entire curriculum of this course will be available online through Blackboard:

  • Distribution of handouts, readings and assignments

  • Instructional Materials including Videos

  • Submissions of assignments and activities

  • Grading

As instructed by your professor, students are required to access instructional materials via Blackboard on a weekly basis.

For help setting up your ACCeID, ACC Gmail, or ACC Blackboard, contact a Learning Lab Technician at any ACC Learning Lab.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Review of modeling practices
  • Creating fully dimensioned drawings from model without input.
  • Creating multiple configuration part files.
  • Use of a product data management (PDM) system and design review.
  • Full assembly with motion constraints will be used including timing and gear ratios
  • GDT knowledge and calculations.
  • Multiple detail drawings from the engine project with tolerance analysis and specifications ensuring correct assembly and function
  • Portfolio work conducted in class with GDT explanations included.

Course Subjects

1. Review of modeling practices.

2. Ensuring drawings are fully dimensioned without input.

3. Creating multiple configuration part files.

4. Use of a product data management system and design review.

5. Full assembly with motion constraints will be used to constrain a single cylinder engine.

6. GDT knowledge and calculations.

7. Multiple detail drawings from the engine project with tolerance analysis and specifications ensuring correct assembly and function.

8.  Portfolio work conducted in class with GDT explanations included.

COURSE OUTLINE/CALENDAR

Drawing Assignments(times are approximate):

Weeks 1-10: Daily Work projects following learning outcomes

Weeks 11-16: Model of multiple parts and assemblies to be used as a team to create a final machine assembly;  Detailed drawings using GDT and calculations derived by function in an assembly.

COURSE EVALUATION/GRADING SCHEME

Grades will be determined as follows:

Daily Work 50%

Reading assignments, quizzes, group participation

Drawing Assignments 30%

Drawings including material selections, finishes, and GDT.

Explanations of how calculations were made for GDT tolerances will be included with each drawing as well as tolerances of fits. Explanations of how datums are derived from assemblies. Drawings, spreadsheets, and calculations for portfolio use.

Final Assembly 20%

Final assy will be created from subassemblies pulled from a central data file system shared by students working from home..  All constraints should be correct and hardware selection will be reviewed for proper size/type/engagement.

*-10 POINT FOR LATE SUBMISSIONS FOR GRADES*

Regular and timely class participation in discussions and completion of work is expected of all students.  If participation or compliance with other course policies is unsatisfactory, the instructor may withdraw students from the class. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor when circumstances prevent him/her from completing projects or keeping up with the pace of the class.   An instructor may lower a student’s final grade on a project for late submission. *ONE POINT WILL BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FINAL GPA FOR EVERY UNEXCUSED ABSENCE INCLUDING BEYOND 15 MINUTES LATE.*

Grades will be determined as follows:

  • 90-100 points = A

  • 80-89 Points = B

  • 70-79 Points = C

  • 60-69 Points = D - NOT PASSING IN OUR DEPARTMENT. MUST RETAKE TO IMPROVE TO A C OR BETTER

  • Less than 60 Points = F

Policy on Late Missing Work

*10 point deduction for late work. Due dates are posted in calendar on BB*

A&E CAD DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
