Course Requirements

Prerequisites: There is no prerequisites for this course.

Simple reading, writing, and mathematics skills are required.

Readings

  1. Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology; by Martini, and Bartholomew; 6th
  2. A Photographic Atlas for the Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory, 8th edition by     Van de        Graff & Crawley. Morton Publishing, Englewood, CO.

Course Subjects

The ACC Biology Department has specified the content of this course, both in terms of the amount of material covered and the specific structures that are covered in both lecture and lab.  The course objectives are available at http://www.austincc.edu/biology (click on the “Common Course Objectives” link).

Course Goals and Expected Learning Outcomes

In addition to your personal goals, ACC and I have further goals to help prepare you for allied health programs and careers. Specific skills and competencies expected of students who successfully complete this course include:

  1. Use anatomical terminology correctly to describe body directions, regions and planes.
  2. Describe the structure and components of a cell and their functions.
  3. Identify anatomical features of the body, including cells, tissues, organs and organs systems on models, preserved tissues, microscopic slides and charts.
  4. Describe the gross anatomy of the organs composing organ systems.
  5. Relate gross anatomy with tissue level organization and develop histological correlations.
  6. Identify important anatomical structures and illustrate anatomical relationships diagrammatically.
  7. Relate biological structure and function of various organ systems.
  8. Handle standard equipment (such as microscopes) and perform techniques (including dissections) in the anatomy lab while adhering strictly to lab and personnel safety protocols.

Work effectively in a group and safely in a lab setting; and follow verbal and written directions
