Theory and practical application in the maintenance of commercial refrigeration; medium, and low temperature applications and ice machines.

Textbooks/Materials:  Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Althouse, Turnquist, and Bracciano, 21st. Edition, Goodheart-Wilcox Company, INC., ISBN: 978-1-63126-354-5

Students are expected to purchase this text book. In addition, each student will be given a course packet which contains the detailed course syllabus, a progress record and handouts containing instructional material and handouts which are lab exercises.  This packet is available free of charge from the Lab Technicians in the HART Lab.

Tools Required:  A high- quality auto-ranging volt-ohm digital multimeter is required for testing electrical circuits and components.  Since there are many choices and options, your instructor will provide valuable advice before you make this purchase.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Student will be able to explain the differences between low, medium and high temperature refrigeration system applications.  Students will be able to identify the various components of each commercial refrigeration system and explain their functions.  Students will understand and perform preventive maintnenance on various commercial refrigeration systems including ice machine, walk-in refrigerator and freezer.  Student will undrstand how to retrofit various refrigerants according to SNAP(Significant New Alternative Refrigeration Program).

Course Title:  COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION; 4 semester credit hours

Course Description: This course introduces the theory of all aspects of commercial refrigeration equipment operation.  Low, medium and high temperature equipment applications including ice machines and walk in refrigerators will be explained. Preventive maintenance and service repair techniques will also be discussed and practiced.  This will include the current information on SNAP (Significant New Alternative Refrigeration Program)

Instructional Methodology: Commercial Refrigereation is a series of lessons that are computer and textbook based theory learning, and hands-on skills applications. Your syllabus packet contains the course syllabus, a progress record and all the lessons for this course. 

Course Rationale: The various differences between air conditioning and refrigeration are great through the commercial application. With the introduction and familiarization of students to the many types of commercial refrigeration, they will be more prepared to step into a commercial position.

Testing:

• All tests are to be taken during your normal scheduled assigned class times.

• All tests are to be administered only by your assigned instructor.

• Tests are to be turned in at the end of the scheduled class, regardless if it is completed or not.

• Be sure that you have enough time to complete your test before starting.

• Each test covers the material presented since the previous test.  The final exam covers the entire course.  

 Course Policies:

 • Class must be in session when any hands-on work is performed.

 • Students are not to perform hands-on work outside of normal class times.

• Shop clean- up begins at least 10 minutes before end of class.  All lab work should stop at that time.  

• A student must clean up spills or mess he creates.

• Students must wear goggles when using grinder, drill, brazing, soldering or working with refrigerant.  

• Safety glasses are an acceptable substitute.

Attendance: You are expected to attend all scheduled meetings. Absences cannot be made up.  It is paramount that you make every effort to attend every class.  In the event you are unable to attend, it is your responsibility to contact your instructor to obtain an excused absence.If you incur more than three un-excused absences, your instructor will drop you from the class. Perfect attendance record will be rewarded by adding 3 points to the final course grade of any student who attends every class meeting.

Perfect Attendance:

Perfect attendance will be rewarded by adding three (3) additional points to student's final course grade. Perfect attendance is defined as:

A. Attending every class

B. Arriving on time for every class

C. Staying engaged during every class

D. Leaving only when class is dismissed
