COURSE DESCRIPTION
Covers the fundamental facts, laws, principles, theories, and concepts of chemistry necessary for further work in science or science-related subjects. Stresses atomic structure, periodic properties of matter, chemical bonding, and molecular geometry of organic and inorganic molecules, states of matter, stoichiometry, and properties of solutions. Prerequisites: One year of high school chemistry or CHEM 1405; two years of high school algebra or MATH 1314 college algebra (Grade C or above).

CALCULATOR/EXCEL
You will need a scientific graphing calculator for lecture and lab activities. During lecture, exams, and lab any style calculator is acceptable. You may also use Microsoft Excel for graphing activities.

COURSE RATIONALE
This course covers the fundamental facts, laws, principles, theories and concepts of chemistry necessary for further work in science or science-related subjects.

COURSE EVALUATION/GRADING
Lecture
The lecture portion constitutes 100% of your grade.
Homework:
Homework should be done before each corresponding unit exam. Exam questions will come from the homework as well as lecture notes, so it is suggested you work all the assigned problems. We will be working some of these problems in class during the lectures and concentrating on homework problems during the exam reviews. I write my own homework and the hard copy of these sets will be posted on Blackboard. I advise you to print and complete the homework problems before taking the Blackboard quizzes. The completion of the Blackboard quizzes for each unit counts as the submission of the homework for the course. Please do not send me the hard copy!!
The solutions to the homework will be available in the form of quizzes on Blackboard. These quizzes will serve as your practice for the exams and as an answer key. You will have unlimited attempts for each homework set quiz and be given the opportunity to see your answers on each attempt.
The series of homework questions will be posted on blackboard as the homework for each unit; the unit homework quizzes will be worth 75 points total (15% of overall grade). Completing each homework quiz on Blackboard counts as completion of the homework. Late homework will not be accepted for credit. Homework quizzes will be on adaptive release, closing on the day of the corresponding unit exam.
Unit Summaries: The course material will be outlined as a summary of topics for each unit and posted on blackboard. You will be responsible for the topics listed for each unit exam, this list will also help navigate online resources and any textbooks you wish to use. We will often follow a different order of topics than the order in a standard textbook.
Exams: There will be five regular exams and a final. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of resources on the exams including, a cheat sheet. Cheat sheets will be voted on in class during the review session. The exams will be given in two formats: a Take Home Exam (2 total) and an in-class portion F2F (face to face) (4 total). As class resumes in person, our exams will be scheduled during lecture time. When combined the scores will consist of 100% of the exam score.
The In Class portion (F2F) or Take Home exams portion is 85% of the total grade. The take home portion will be written with open resources in mind and you are able to use available resources. Please follow the instructions for each exam, some resources may be limited.
Google Policy: (or equivalent search engine)
I am aware that a lot of online resources are available for general chemistry, including course hero, Chegg etc. It is not ok to use these types of resources. It is ok to look up information, but not search direct answers to questions. For example, a test question might be “How many moles are in 10g of Li?” It is ok to search the concepts of moles, the atomic weight of Li, the symbol Li……but it is not ok to enter the question on Chegg and give their answer. Let’s be clear this is a Chegg student’s answer not yours. This is academic dishonesty. This will result in a score of zero for the question, possibly the exam, and academic dishonesty repercussions with the college.
Extra Credit: There will occasionally be extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, these will be presented in class. The total points for extra credit will be capped at 25 points for the semester.

It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of deadlines and plan accordingly.
Correspondence: The best method of communication is office hours, I am available M-Th in office hours and most questions are best discussed in person. I will read email M-Th during the week, but usually only respond to direct questions and may take a day to respond.

Google Classroom
You will turn in and receive grades for the take home portions of exams on Google Classroom. Please sign up in the first week of class.
Final Lecture Grade: Each regular exam is worth 100 points, the final is worth 100 points, homework sets total 75 points, there are a total of 600 possible exam points, but only 500 will be considered for the final grade the lowest test grade is dropped. Homework is worth 75 points in total. The total points considered for the final grade in the course is 575. This total point score will comprise 100% of the course grade.
FINAL EVALUATION:
Grading Scale for the course: A = 517 points (90-100%), B = 460 points (80-89%), C = 402 points (70-79%), D = 345 points (60-69%)

GENERAL COURSE POLICIES
Attendance Policy: You are not required to attend lecture; however, attendance is strongly recommended. All exam questions stem from in class lecture, missing class means missing exam specific material. You do not need to email me to let me know you are going to miss class and you are responsible for any material missed.
Withdrawal Policy
It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.
Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall, 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate, for that course.
State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. With certain exceptions, all course withdrawals automatically count towards this limit. Details regarding this policy can be found in the ACC college catalog.
Incompletes
An instructor may award a grade of “I” (Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. An incomplete grade cannot be carried beyond the established date in the following semester. The completion date is determined by the instructor but may not be later than the final deadline for withdrawal in the subsequent semester.
Statement on Scholastic Dishonesty
A student attending ACC assumes responsibility for conduct compatible with the mission of the college as an educational institution. Students have the responsibility to submit coursework that is the result of their own thought, research, or self-expression. Students must follow all instructions given by faculty or designated college representatives when taking examinations, placement assessments, tests, quizzes, and evaluations. Actions constituting scholastic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, collusion, and falsifying documents. Concealed Handgun Policy
- The Austin Community College District concealed handgun policy ensures compliance with Section 411.2031 of the Texas Government Code (also known as the Campus Carry Law), while maintaining ACC’s commitment to provide a safe environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Beginning August 1, 2017, individuals who are licensed to carry (LTC) may do so on campus premises except in locations and at activities prohibited by state or federal law, or the college’s concealed handgun policy.

- The Austin Community College District concealed handgun policy ensures compliance with Section 411.2031 of the Texas Government Code (also known as the Campus Carry Law), while maintaining ACC’s commitment to provide a safe environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Covers the fundamental facts, laws, principles, theories, and concepts of chemistry necessary for further work in science or science-related subjects. Stresses atomic structure, periodic properties of matter, chemical bonding, and molecular geometry of organic and inorganic molecules, states of matter, stoichiometry, and properties of solutions. Prerequisites: One year of high school chemistry or CHEM 1405; two years of high school algebra or MATH 1314 college algebra (Grade C or above).

Lecture
The lecture portion constitutes 100% of your grade.
Homework:
Homework should be done before each corresponding unit exam. Exam questions will come from the homework as well as lecture notes, so it is suggested you work all the assigned problems. We will be working some of these problems in class during the lectures and concentrating on homework problems during the exam reviews. I write my own homework and the hard copy of these sets will be posted on Blackboard. I advise you to print and complete the homework problems before taking the Blackboard quizzes. The completion of the Blackboard quizzes for each unit counts as the submission of the homework for the course. Please do not send me the hard copy!!
The solutions to the homework will be available in the form of quizzes on Blackboard. These quizzes will serve as your practice for the exams and as an answer key. You will have unlimited attempts for each homework set quiz and be given the opportunity to see your answers on each attempt.
The series of homework questions will be posted on blackboard as the homework for each unit; the unit homework quizzes will be worth 75 points total (15% of overall grade). Completing each homework quiz on Blackboard counts as completion of the homework. Late homework will not be accepted for credit. Homework quizzes will be on adaptive release, closing on the day of the corresponding unit exam.
Unit Summaries: The course material will be outlined as a summary of topics for each unit and posted on blackboard. You will be responsible for the topics listed for each unit exam, this list will also help navigate online resources and any textbooks you wish to use. We will often follow a different order of topics than the order in a standard textbook.
Exams: There will be five regular exams and a final. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of resources on the exams including, a cheat sheet. Cheat sheets will be voted on in class during the review session. The exams will be given in two formats: a Take Home Exam (2 total) and an in-class portion F2F (face to face) (4 total). As class resumes in person, our exams will be scheduled during lecture time. When combined the scores will consist of 100% of the exam score.
The In Class portion (F2F) or Take Home exams portion is 85% of the total grade. The take home portion will be written with open resources in mind and you are able to use available resources. Please follow the instructions for each exam, some resources may be limited.
Google Policy: (or equivalent search engine)
I am aware that a lot of online resources are available for general chemistry, including course hero, Chegg etc. It is not ok to use these types of resources. It is ok to look up information, but not search direct answers to questions. For example, a test question might be “How many moles are in 10g of Li?” It is ok to search the concepts of moles, the atomic weight of Li, the symbol Li……but it is not ok to enter the question on Chegg and give their answer. Let’s be clear this is a Chegg student’s answer not yours. This is academic dishonesty. This will result in a score of zero for the question, possibly the exam, and academic dishonesty repercussions with the college.
Extra Credit: There will occasionally be extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, these will be presented in class. The total points for extra credit will be capped at 25 points for the semester.

Homework is worth 75 points in total. The total points considered for the final grade in the course is 575. This total point score will comprise 100% of the course grade.

All exam questions stem from in class lecture, missing class means missing exam specific material. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.
Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall, 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate, for that course.
State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. With certain exceptions, all course withdrawals automatically count towards this limit. Details regarding this policy can be found in the ACC college catalog.
Incompletes
An instructor may award a grade of “I” (Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. An incomplete grade cannot be carried beyond the established date in the following semester. The completion date is determined by the instructor but may not be later than the final deadline for withdrawal in the subsequent semester.

Statement on Students with Disabilities
Each ACC campus offers support services for students with documented disabilities. Students with disabilities who need classroom, academic or other accommodations must request them through the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). Students are encouraged to request accommodations when they register for courses or at least three weeks before the start of the semester, otherwise the provision of accommodations may be delayed.
Students who have received approval for accommodations from OSD for this course must provide the instructor with the ‘Notice of Approved Accommodations’ from OSD before accommodations will be provided. Arrangements for academic accommodations can only be made after the instructor receives the ‘Notice of Approved Accommodations’ from the student.

Concealed Handgun Policy
- The Austin Community College District concealed handgun policy ensures compliance with Section 411.2031 of the Texas Government Code (also known as the Campus Carry Law), while maintaining ACC’s commitment to provide a safe environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Beginning August 1, 2017, individuals who are licensed to carry (LTC) may do so on campus premises except in locations and at activities prohibited by state or federal law, or the college’s concealed handgun policy.
- It is the responsibility of license holders to conceal their handguns at all times. Persons who see a handgun on campus are asked to contact the ACC Police Department by dialing 222 from a campus phone or 512-223-7999.
