Course Requirements
Required Materials:
To enhance your learning experience and provide affordable access to the right course material, this course is part of an inclusive access model called First Day™. You can easily access the required materials for this course at a discounted price, and benefit from single sign-on access with no codes required in Blackboard. Austin Community College includes the discounted price as a course fee in your registration fees for this course. It is NOT recommended that you Opt Out, as these materials are required to complete the course. You can choose to Opt Out on the first day of class, but you will be responsible for purchasing your course materials at the full retail price and access to your materials may be suspended. For more information, including the Opt-Out process, see the Course Materials link in the course menu on the left.
- If you opted out, you still must purchase Modified Mastering A&P with Pearson eText for Human Anatomy and Physiology, 11th edition, by Marieb and Hoehn. Pearson Educational Inc., 2019, ISBN-13: 9780134763446 directly through the link provided on Blackboard (you may use an earlier edition of the text but must purchase the access code for the 11th edition of Modified Mastering A&P; do not purchase Modified Mastering A&P from a 3rd party vendor; Both The Textbook And Modified Mastering A&P Are Required For This Course)
- A computer or iPad compatible with Respondus Monitor testing software. Chromebooks and other tablets are not compatible with Respondus Monitor. Technical requirements include:
- Windows (7,8,10), Mac (OS X 10.10 or higher), or iPad (iOS 10.0+)
- web camera (internal or external)
- microphone
- broadband internet connection
ACC is offering iPad distribution here: https://www.austincc.edu/coronavirus/remote-student-support/ipad-distribution
Note-Taking Supplies / Paper Management Supplies:
Studies continue to indicate that students retain more information if they take notes by hand vs. digitally. Thus, as described below under “Instructional Methodology,” I have prepared “Guided Notes” that students may fill in as we go through lecture material.
I understand that many of you may not have access to a printer or money for ink. If that is the case for you, I recommend you borrow an iPad from ACC, buy a stylus pen or smart pen (ex: Apple Pencil), and use a note writing app such as Notability or GoodNotes.
If you do have access to a printer and prefer to take notes on paper, you can visit the closest public library and use their computers to print. If you do, I strongly encourage you to use recommended protection practices while at the library such as use a mask, physically distance, minimize touching any surfaces other than the computer, wash your hands, do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, etc.
If you choose to use paper notes, you will need something to write on and something to write with during every class period. I also recommend that you purchase a binder or a folder with labeled dividers in which to keep your lecture notes, completed worksheets and handouts.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives
Student Learning Outcomes:
Course-Level:
Specific skills and competencies expected of students who complete this course include:
- Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
- Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ functions in each system.
- Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
- Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
- Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
- Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
- Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
- Locate and identify anatomical structures.
- Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems, and virtual simulations.
- Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
- Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.
- Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.
- Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills, including but not limited to, inferring, integrating, synthesizing, and summarizing, to make decisions, recommendations and predictions.
General Education:
As a Core Curriculum course, students completing this course will demonstrate competence in:
- Demonstrating higher level critical thinking skills, solving problems, and following directions.
- Directing their own learning activities to meet course objectives.
Departmental Common Course Objectives:
