1.    TRUE+WAY ASL (TWA) e-Workbook assignments 

This workbook is designed to retain and reinforce what is learned. Complete the assigned workbook assignments by assigned due dates announced. Late assignments will not be accepted.

2.  Self-Observation Assessment Review (SOAR)

The Self-Observation Assessment Review (SOAR) videos at the end of each unit in TRUE+WAY ASL e-Workbook website. You are to record your work and submit your video as instructed then complete the self-abasement rubric by the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted.

3. Peer Observation Assessment (POA)

The Peer-Observation Assessment (POA) assignments at the end of each unit showing signer is signing something incorrectly on purpose, you are to answer the questions.   Late assignments will not be accepted.

 

4.   Online Interactive Dialogue

You are required to participate in an interactive dialogue for each unit in the workbook on the course website. There are six units, which means you will be participating at least six times throughout the semester. See the instructions in TWA eWorkboook for details. Late assignments will not be accepted.

5. Culture: Deaf Again & Film Quizzes

Deaf Again: The quizzes will be based on the book Deaf Again (4th Edition), chapters 1 - 14. You will take the online quizzes. You may not make up any quizzes you miss – if you miss a quiz, you will get a zero. See the Assignments/Exam Dates below for the due date.

Film quizzes: You are required to view a total of 3 films and complete 3 online quizzes. All films are available online.

6. Quizzes 

The quizzes will be based mainly on the ability to comprehend ASL and cultural information. Questions may also be drawn from the reading/viewing of the TRUE+WAY ASL e-workbook/video, video assignments, vocabulary, and class discussions.

7.    Unit Tests: Comprehension & Production 

Unit tests will cover all material presented to that point of the class. They will include information from quizzes, TRUE+WAY ASL, class notes, handouts, lectures, vocabulary videos, as well as your comprehension and production skills. There will be no make-up of the tests except under circumstances I deem to be extreme or unique.

First, go to the Blackboard and start with the TRUE+WAY ASL (TWA) student join link to connect your workbook directly to this course. The TWA student join link will be posted in the Blackboard Announcement. You will do most, if not all, of assignments, quizzes, and tests in there.

When you register for the eWorkbook, you will be prompted to pay or put in codes (you can pay directly or get codes from the ACC bookstore).

You need to get all 5 units otherwise, the link will not work.

Cultural Awareness

 1. The student will increase his/her awareness of Deaf issues and understand characteristics of American Deaf Culture and the American Deaf Community as well as experience ASL through a variety of mediums. The mediums are not limited to Deaf functions, but the student is also responsible for the cultural notes from TRUE+WAY ASLDeaf Again, films, and cultural information discussed in the snapshot.

In addition to working toward increased proficiency in ASL, this course is intended to fulfill one semester of the foreign language requirement as needed for ACC’s Interpreter Training Associate's Degree or as transfer credit to a four-year institution. The number of courses required varies by discipline and institution.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

Course Rationale/Objectives: The purpose of this course is designed to help you develop the study skills you need to learn a language and to review and practice what you are learning in your language class. This may include lectures, small group activities, use of electronic media, going to ASL Lab, and Deaf events. You will be encouraged to practice your receptive and expressive skills so that you can have a positive experience with your language course. Students are expected to come to class well prepared to participate in daily discussions. The grammatical explanations will be kept to a minimum and students will be required to work in pairs and small groups. Active participation in group work is required for the success of the class.
